Am I alone in feeling this was vastly superior to the redesign deep sea? One of the best they've ever made. Wore my friend's deep sea the other day and it's just so gaudy w/ the words on inner bezel, unnecessarily thick case. Gaudy. Don't like the big cases Rolex is trending to a la Deep Sea & YM2.

Message- I miss the Sea Dweller. My first Rolex ever.

You are likely not alone, however I tried on the DSSD and I ponder a purchase daily. It's a meat of a watch. Albeit, I'd never sell my SD for it, just add to the Sub family.

I love my 16600 but I do also like the Deep Sea; it's too big for me but I do like the design. I wonder if they will bring out a new version of the Sea Dweller, a smaller Deep Sea.

I had a SD and would have owned a Sub if it weren't for the cyclops. Very few need the depth rating of the SD and no one needs that of the DSSD. Come to think of it, I should have just started with a ND Sub and might still own it.

DSSD certainly looks the part but is too much watch for me. The 16600 would be my choice but really a Submariner is all I need.

I started out with a no date Sub 45 years ago. After all that time and a great many watches, I recently bought a 16600 with lug holes in excellent, almost mint condition.
I love the size, weight and the date without the cyclops. Maybe my last watch.

You are not alone....... I tried on the DSSD the first time I saw it and that thing was not for me... The SD16600 & older models were master pieces.

Here's my SD (16600) - about time I got it out again, but just been enjoying the 1675 and 1680 so much recently. I like the DSSD, but I reckon it will be huge on me, so I'll stick with the more subtle older brother. Cheers, K.

The SD is an easier fit for most, it goes deeper than any normal human will ever need and was more affordable when new. Now in the pre-owned market the same applies.

So I'd take SD over DSSD all day long.

Hey no problem, buy the SD and be happy. I had a SD and couldn't stand how skinny the hour markers are and nearly non existent lume, compared to the modern line and the Omegas I was used to. Still an awesome watch though, but just not for me.
So I sold it and bought a Deepsea and could not be happier. Yes it's big but there's a reason and if this reason doesn't serve your needs, hey, guess what plenty of options in the Rolex stable to include the millions of SDs still floating around.

Plenty of Rolexes I don't like, no point in wasting energy in what I'm not going to buy or like, much more useful to be positive.
I could understand if this was a comparison in which both watches were scrutinized for pros and cons or you needed help in deciding which one, since you like both, this doesn't seem like that.

And I don't feel the SD is vastly superior to the Deepsea. We could talk specifics....but they're just different watches and serve different needs for everyone. If your needs are xyz then those needs may make it a better choice, for you, or superior if you will in that sense.
Show us your SD, always like to look at pics of it anyway.

The 16600 is my all time favorite Rolex, bar none. However, I am looking forward to a Deep Sea at some point. At first, I thought it would be too big, so I purchased a huge beater mechanical diver watch to try and live with. I now know I can live with the deep sea.

I agree with this the dssd is a masterpiece but a whole different look and feel. The sd is Greek perfect in its dimensions and is visually perfect on proportion with the thickness swoop lugs and balance. A homerun for now and ever

I think the 16600 is the best dive watch rolex has ever made. Everyone could wear one. I like the New DSSD but I can't wear it because of the size. I am just disappointed that they no longer offer that class of dive watch in my size. If anything hopefully the 16600 will go up in value.

I do like the 16600, it's an awesome watch, but IMHO any diving watch without a 60 minute bezel is useless for timing a dive. Same with the planet ocean, there's no accuracy with a 15 minute bezel! But that's purely for diving, as styling and size goes each to there own!

While I don't disagree with you regarding the inferior design of the minute hashes ONLY the first 15 min......the regular minute marks on the dial can be used against the bezel to accurately time your dive. I do it all the time, and my digital backup timer confirms the time on the Rolex to the exact minute.

I love all forms of the Sea Dweller (including the Deepsea) but I agree that the 16600 is a particularly great/classic looking watch. If all goes as planned, I should be picking one up in about 2 weeks!

I have the SD and my buddy has the deep sea, the SD fits me perfect and the deep sea is too big. That what most say, "I tried it on and it was too big"

But over the past year I take his deep sea all the time and put it on. Walk around with It spend the day getting used to the weight of it. It deff grows on you, or at least it did on me. My point is I think the deep sea needs more than just a try on to fully appreciate it for what it is. He tells me that after the first week he never notices how large it is.

But in the end SD is still my choice.

I like the DSSD but the 16600 SD is very special and it's no surprise to see there price constantly rise, probably the best Rolex ever produced IMHO.
