USD 14,400 - there have been several price increases in the past months, and there's another on the horizon. If you buy it, will you become the guru of the TPF?

Ouch, man!

Well, I guessed it would be expensive. I'd better start saving then! But if I flipped either my GMT IIc or my SS Cos, I'd be much closer to it.

I wonder...
Pams are becoming fashion statements.. Anything earlier than 1990 is worth a squidzillion $$

I have 2 ordinary Pams (112 and 164). I think I'll hang on to them for a bit

I think the MSRP of the PAM270 is £7600, but worth every single penny what a truly beautiful watch

Just like Patek: Glucydur balance with Gyromax adjusting screws.

Awesome!

There IS one thing that bugs me, though! The leather strap! Very nice, but not so practical for everyday use. How long is a leather strap normally supposed to last?? A year? Two years, before it stinks of sweat? Panerai straps don't come cheap, and it would be a pain in the neck to have to buy a strap that costs 500+ $ every single or second year!

I might opt for a Panerai rubber strap for it if I buy the PAM.

Thoughts?

bo, panerai's are famous for changing straps many panerai owners have atleast 2-3 different straps for each model..

they are very cool and not that expensive and are hand made from serious panerai owners.. they sell around 70 up to 150 dollars.. all types of leathers and stichings..

i just ordered a strap for my pam 249 will show pics when i get it.

and my next panerai would be a pam 090

Thanks, Thani!

In your opinion, would a rubber strap on the 10 days GMT look wrong? I am talking about the original rubber strap.

Also, another thing that bugs me just a bit: Undoubtedly, with the in-house movt. and the same type of balance that Patek uses, the 10 days GMT is - at least potentially - a very, very precise timepiece! It might keep even better time - over a long period, that is! - than a Rolex watch.

BUT: what's the deal with great accuracy (it does have a second's hand) when you cannot tell for sure what the MINUTE hand is pointing every time it is between the five markers??? I mean: is it 12 minutes past? Or 11 past??

I'd would love to hear your thoughts on this!

some panerais come with 2 straps when purchased, a rubber and a leather strap.. but not all.. i never seen a 10 day GMT with a rubber but i dont think it would look bad.

second of all when you talk about 10 day power reserve compared to the patek movement i dunno what to say. on the other hand the main supply of power is the spring and how long it is, panerais have large and thick cases to handle such movements..

and on accuracy IMO if you set the watch right the first time then im sure you be able to tell if it was 10:11 or 10:12 bo, its not a big puzzle you just need to get used to it.. i have the same problem sometimes with my DJ with MOP dial and diamond hour markers..

Bo, I'm gonna be in Firenze/Florence in a few days. Give me all the details and i'll check it out for you at the Panerai boutique. I'm assuming here it's a current model? with an inhouse movement it better be, seeing as they only came out with those from around 2002 if memory serves me correctly.

Yup, I noticed that, Thani. Very cool! But I also noticed that if you are travelling and want to use the GMT function to set the watch to a different time zone, the function is the OPPOSITE than on the Rolex GMT II:

On the Panerai, the "normal" HOUR hand would tell the HOME time, and the GMT hand would tell the time in the destination country.

Again, this is something that bugs me!

When looking at a watch to tell the time, instinctively you would look at the NORMAL hour hand, NOT the GMT hand. This is why I prefer the Rolex GMT II since you have let the hour hand jump in one hour intervals and have the "subordinary" GMT hand show the local time in your own country.

See my point??

BTW: I am biased if I should go for the Panerai or the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, shown in this thread!

As always, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this, Thani, since I know you know a lot about watches.

Wow, Lee! That'd be great! If you can take pics, it would be awesome! Only if it is no trouble and the AD does not mind!

Great gesture! I appreciate that!

No trouble Bo, am heading that way anyhow.

What other info do I need or do I just go ask for the 10 Day 1950 Luminor GMT... a simple reference number would be easier

Not sure about pics but I'll see what I can do. A friend of mine is an AD in the small town of Forte dei Marmi so I'll see what he can do for me. I mean, if the price is right it might save you buckets to go down to Italy and pick it up there. The savings could work out to the cost of the Easyjet/Ryanair airfare and a night's hotel!! You guys pay too much for stuff in Denmark, but your social welfare system and public service is second to none.

Thanks, Lee! You da man!

The ref. # is PAM 00270, but I sure they'd know what you're talking about if you just ask for the "Panerai 10 days GMT".

Also thanks for the offer with an US AD deal, but problem is that I cannot have anything very expensive sent to Denmark without being hit badly by custom's.

Bo, my AD friend is in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, about 30 minutes by car from Florence. You could fly down, pick up the watch, have a great meal, sit by the beach, then fly home and have a great time and save some dosh on the watch and have a weekend away n'est pas?

You have a point there, Lee! I have never been to Italy, but always wanted to go there!

Could you PM me the contact infos of that AD when you get the time? I would need an email address, preferably to a staff member who might also be able to make a discount.

Oh, btw: if you see a dealer who sells BLANCPAIN watches, it would be great with contact infos of that store, too. As I state in a previous post, I am biased between the Panerai 10 days GMT and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

Again, if this is inconvinient for you, please just enjoy your vacations and I will see if I can find an AD that stocks Blancpain.

I did ask an AD in Denmark about the Blancpain, but there are no official AD's for Blancpain in Denmark. He did state that he could order one for me since he did stock Blancpain watches in the mid 1980ies and that he on an occasional basis orders parts to service watches of existing customers.

The problem is that he would NOT order it home so that I could "just have a closer look at it"! If he orders it, it is mine!

I told him that I cannot tell for sure that I indeed will buy the watch since I have yet to see it in person! Damn, I hate this AD. Baaad customer service! Luckily, it is NOT my normal AD, so I can just show him my and take my business elsewhere.....like Italy, for instance!

I prefer this one with the more traditional GMT hand.

Hmmmm.... Blancpain... there was one near Place Vendome here in Paris. No FF though, at least not the plain. Chronograph and Tourbillon yes, but no plain. I'm probably not going to be going back to Place Vendome this trip, but take a look at the BP website, I'm sure they would list ADs there.

I actually like the Pam 00051 Luminor Marina with the white dial and steel bracelet.

I've never been a massive fan of Panerai but that watch is clean and sharp and looks good.

Update Bo:

PAM 270 not available at the moment, but there is a PAM233 coming into the Florence Boutique tomorrow morning, which they'll hold for me to take a look at. Price is Euro9,300 with a possible 14.5%VAT refund if you're taking it out of the EU.

RE: Strap
They all come with an extra rubber strap in the box, with tool, and they offered to throw in another strap of my choice if I decided to buy.

And for shop info if anyone is coming through Florence:

Officine Panerai, Bottega d'Arte e Archivo Storico (boutique and historical archive)
Piazza Santa Giovanni, 16R (Palazzo Arcivescovile)
T: +39055215795
E: [email protected]

It's the original shop where the Panerai family set up their shop, Orologeria Svizzera, and it's still owned by them. It's also right opposite the Duomo, can't miss it.

Bo, I've got your travel plans worked out for you...

Go to Geneva to drool over watches, then take the night train into Florence, check into a great hotel in Santa Maria Novella, take a nap, have lunch at an Osteria nearby, go pick up your watch, then enjoy great food and wine with your lady, then fly home while collecting the VAT on your way out. Is Denmark EU???

I like my 233. Actually a "10 Day" also but labeled 8 to pay homage to past models.

Personally, I think the p2003 is a "stupid" movement. Make a 10 day power reserve with a reserve display AND then make it self-winding?

Matt,

Could you please clarify? By self-winding do you mean manual wind as opposed to automatic winding? The P.2003 is a manual movement as far as I'm aware, and self-winding refers to automatic winding...

Unless I've got the whole lot mixed up in my defective cognitive processes!!??!!

Bo - I have to put in a word here about the leather Pannie straps. Having a few straps and changing them off is part of the fun of Panerai ownership. The rubber strap looks pretty great on most Panerais.

Re- leather straps. Most of them will look better with age and use. I saw a very old totally beat up and discolored Panerai strap sell for over $200. on a website a couple of weeks ago (Paneristi.com?).

If you wear one every day it will eventually start to get smelly. Simply take it and dip it in pure isopropyl alcohol for 30 seconds, leave it to dry by itself. Alcohol kills any kind of germ or bacteria that would cause a strap to smell.
Doing this may cause a slight change in the appearance of the strap, but not as much as you might think. They are supposed to get aged and worn looking... All Best, Larry.

Very nice 233, BigHat.

I think that any Panerai is nice, and if you're even considering something over $10K, their 8-day watches are fine enough
