What would you buy?

If you had an opportunity to purchase one watch with a spending limit of $5,000.00 that you would buy for an investment. You basically wear it on very special occassions, but other wise it would be in the box for 15-20 years. Which model would you buy. Take your time, and think hard.

I would try to get a really good cond. GMT pepsi with box and papers

have it serviced and polished, then lock it away.

bring that back out in 15-20 years time and you would go:

WOW!

Well myself would never recommend buying any watch purely as a investment.Myself believe one of the next sort after watches from the 90s will be the 14060 Sub with the tritium dial.Could be the next vintage must have, now out of production. If you can get hold of one mint with box papers etc,I believe that prices will rise in a few years time, could be the next investment piece.

Well, for that amount of money you can`t buy anything that would be rare in some 15-20 years.Even the LV Sub cost littlle more.So my opinion is that you buy SS watch that you like the most.
You have a wide range of wonderful models,both sport(Explorer I & II,GMT II,Sub ND & Date,SD...)and dress(Air King,Datejust...),so you cannot make mistake.
Wish you luck with your purchase!

Perhaps a COSC ND Sub, IF it's going to be discontinued soon. But there are better investments than watches IMHO.

5,000 invested invested will out preform any $5,000 watch over a twenty year period.

I'd agree with Peter and go for the Sub 14060 Tritium.

I can think of several references in the vintage arena--5513 being the easiest. Also some of the transitionals--16800. I agree trit. dials will be something to consider as many of the plastic references are getting into nose bleed territory.

As far as modern pieces, the best I can think is the LV(albeit not at list) and the COSC 14060M, but that's dependent on Rolex's future plans.

If you want an investment, forget watches.

If you want something for special occasions only, get a dress watch like a DJ.

5k isn't enough to get anything new...

I would be looking for a late GMT or Sub that has some of the transition earmarks or is poised to go vintage (maybe a 16700 or late 1680).

They are Rolex proven performers...

I TOTALLY disagree that a Rolex is a bad investment. Just don't buy a new one!

I have bought and sold something like 30 watches in the last 10 years and I have never lost money. Like any investment, you need a good mix of judgement, research, balls and luck but you can make money out of watches. I never aim to earn living or retire on my watch sales but I do constantly trade-up so I can feed my collecting addiction.

As to which ones are safe bets. Well, this is where the research, balls and luck come in. I have my opinions but if I tell everyone then it won't happen. There are plenty of great, iconic pieces in the used market for under $5000. Would you rather put $5000 in the Dow Jones or have something nice on your wrist?

Thanks for all the info,I should have phrased my question differently. Most of the answers are common. In reference to the investment part of my question, I under stand that it probably isn't a very smart financial move to buy a watch as an investment, it's more like an appreciating asset. I was just wondering what my TRF family would buy. I'm still looking for some more answers.

By the way, the question I posed wasn't about investment portfolios, I just wanted to know what watch of your choice you would purchase. That is the reason, I kept the dollar amount low. Regards.

Not sure it is good for these watches to sit in a box for 20 years. You will have completely congealed oils and a full service to deal with. Deduct that from any profit you think you might make. These watches are made to be worn. To not wear them is like denying them their nature. Go make your money elsewhere so that you can afford to wear rare watches.

$5k that's like two and a half grand in British isn't it?

It would have to be a brand new no date Sub....registered in my son's name.

Or maybe that nice ladies SS OP black dial, purple/pink stick markers. My wife loves that watch. I'm sure that would be a great investment!!!!!!!!

As you've rephrased the question, my answer would be None. There's no watch for >$US5K that I would want (that I don't already have).

And I would never buy a watch to keep in a box except on special occasions. That to me is a waste of money and watch. But that's just MHO.

Yes, it's £2,500. But why buy a new one if you are going to store it? Better to buy an older watch and save a pile of cash. The investment doesn't have as far to climb to make a return. A good no date sub can be had for about £1,500. In 20 years from now, it won't matter if you bought it new or not.

For me, the 14060 is the 5513 of the future.

Also, the are 1000's of sub-dates sold every year. For future value, I would go for the SD every time.

And for the record, I would only ever buy a watch if I would wear it. I also don't believe in storing them for the future. Rolex watches need to be worn, cherished and enjoyed.

I'd probably look for a used datejust if you're only going to wear for dressier occassions.

You can get a new Rolex for 5k and if you are sent to the right AD it wont have to be the ND Sub.

The stock market is for investments and the Rolex shop is where you spend the profits from your "real" investments.

In the above case, I would buy none... nada. I would put $5k in a CD account.

This leads me to have another question. What would we choose below???

1) Put $5k in a saving account w/ a guaranteed rate of return monthly for 15-20 YEARS.

2) Buy a Rolex worth $5k & put it in a box for 15-20 yrs. Wear it about twice a YEAR & pay another $1,500 for services.

It's so hard to choose.

The COSC 14060M. If Rolex comes out with an all supercased Sub soon, the 1460M may be one of those limited production pieces. Never know....
