Barber or Stylist?

I just got my hair cut, and it occurred to me that I have been going to a hair stylist for years, even though I haven't actually had a "hair style" since about 1988. There are several good barbers in the small town where I live, but in all honesty, I go to Missi because she's much more attractive than Jon or Howie.

So, the question is: barber, stylist, DIY or other and why?

I don't know. For the past decade plus I have been going to the barber and have been getting an increasingly poor haircut. As my hair greys and becomes less manageable I'm actually thinking of going to the stylist to get a better job.

I need to find a Missy or a better barber.

I've been going to the same Barber, Ron, for over 23 years and he does a great job on the little hair I have. When I last went to a Stylist, she blamed me for the way "she" cut my hair...
That's when I decided to go back to a Barber.....

Barber, which is infuriatingly nigh-on impossible to find here. Consequently I've done DIY a few times as well, with a decent set of Wahl clippers.

There are namby stylists all over the place, and they are major a rip-off. 80 bucks for a cut at the 'Coiffure' which has to be booked first, and always includes wash/dry, which I don't want, thanks.

So, I eventually managed to find a normal barber, run by great Iranian guys, (the only barber shops are run by immigrants here, it seems - doesn't appear to be part of the Swiss 'culture') where they do short-back-and-sides in about 20 mins, no appt. required, for 20 bucks. Sorted.

That's when I decided to go back to a Barber.....

Have to agree old fashion barber for me, some of these so called stylists today just run there fingers through your hair and charge a arm and a leg for the privilege.

I do it myself with a set of Wahl clippers.

My hair "style" is nothing fancy and easy enough as a DIY project provided my wife trims the neckline when I am done.

It has become a personal pet peeve how I have paid "SYLISTS" up to $45 to do a simple 10 minute cut and it looks worse than what I can do with a set of clippers.

So, everytime I cut my own hair, $25 goes into the vacation bucket.

I pretty much shave my own head unless I have an event coming up. Then I go to Great Clips or something similar. Most guys haircuts are simple and there is not a lot to it. I learned that paying $60 or $12 will get you the same cut if you know who you are going to...and I can shampoo my own own hair.

Same here.
I have a crew cut so it's pretty easy. I have my wife clean up my neck/ear line each time and go to a barber every couple months for him to use the straight razor.
Bought this 2-3 years ago now and it's paid for itself a few times.

Once upon a time I went to a stylist, $35 a pop back in the 80's, I was throwing money away! Now I go to great-cuts or hairstyles unlimited (same setup as great-cuts) costs me $15.99 plus $5.00 tip.

i go to a stylist that actually costs less than my local barber.

cost me 12 bucks for a haircut at the salon
and the barber in my home town charges 18 bucks.

granted i don't really get my haircut too often, but when i do i choose stylist (cheaper)

As I mentioned, I have no style, so cutting my hair is pretty simple. Therefore, my main criterion for choosing someone is whether I can tolerate the half-hour of chit-chat with the person while in the chair. I've had great cuts from competent people but have quit going to them because of the banal banter. (Yes, I am a total geek.) Fortunately, Missi rides a motorcycle, was a ski-bum and hunts, so the chat is tolerable.

Turkish barber for me.

I wear my hair short and have done since 2001. Always clippered at the sides and either cut very short on top or just clippered as well. I did it myself for a while but it never looked as finished as when a pro does it so I've been going to this barber for about 3 years.
Whenever possible I skip shaving for a day before going and get a straight-shave while I'm there.


Stylists tend to be too prissy for my taste and fuss for fusses sake! When I go to my barber I don't need an appointment and I'm out in 30 mins with a shave, haircut, ears singed and head massage with some lemon scented alcohol feeling like a million bucks and looking like James Bond.

Crew cut so real easy to do myself but I go to a local barber. Joe was born, raised and trained in Italy. His shop is very much the typical barber shop with twisting barber pole, old chairs, barbicide jar, and all. Going there brings me back to my youth when my dad (long passed) would take me to a similar place and we would both get a cut. Nostalgia can be a warm wonderful thing.

I have a simple cut; numbers 5 or 6 on top and 2 on the sides. A cut costs $5.00 + tip. I usually only get it cut on a weekday if I have it off as Saturdays are always busy and I'd have to wait.

My barber's shop;







He's an older guy, probably in his late 70's. He rides a 400cc scooter. He's always preferred scooters over motorcycles. The shop is loaded with military, fire, police (badges) and war paraphernalia (guns, flags, etc), framed pictures/newspaper clippings and motorcycle models.
It's a cool place.

Great topic... I have a barber I go to in manhattan that costs me 17 bucks plus tip... My wife's haircut with some famous hair stylist costs 350.00.... Waste of money!!
