I just learned today
that all Rolex hands are made of gold, not just the TT and all-gold ones. I was at the Dentist reading a watch magazine. There was an article that said all Rolexes have gold hands, including the SS and Subs. They are white gold. Maybe you guys knew that, I didn't. They even double-checked with Rolex as many people didn't believe it was true. Just wanted to pass that along...Kind of interesting.

The same is true of many other brands, including Blancpain.
Hopefully this will eliminate long-term rusting issues with the hands.

Though not as 'tool-like' as the vintage Rolexes (w/o the WG surrounds), I find them a major contributor to the overall class and quality appearance of current Rolex dials. Comparing Rolex to lesser watches, it's glaringly apparent the quality of the dial on the Rolex is a cut above. Knowing they're gold also helps justify the price, in some small way. I think the WG surrounds are a major player in the overall appeal of the dial. JHMO...

Dare I say it - the WG is very tool like as it is more corrosion resistant. Not just a way to move the watch to a more luxury appeal.

I talk like that all the time.
I don't really care that most other people don't understand me, so long as my Rollie does. |

Interesting info! The Rolex price list states "applied gold indices" (where indices normally is a term used for the dial markers, not the hands). But it is nice to know that the hands are made of gold, too.

Always intrigued me that they painted the hands on my Exp II black, they could have saved a few quid and no used gold, but I suppose that is Rolex's attitude to producing fine watches, and I love them for it.

Yes, white gold. All Rollies now have hands and markers made of either white or yellow gold.....be the watch SS, TT or full gold.....even Platinum (WG in the case of Pt).

Have you seen how they use this air sucker thingy to pick the hands up off the worksurface so they don't handle them? Quite cool!

Hey JJ! You with the platty! Are your (watch) hands and dial details WG or Pt?
I love platinum I really do...maybe even more than you!! The only platinum I got is in the various mineral specimens I got - I just sold an ounce of placer grains a couple of weeks ago... the colour and heft is wonderful! |

I've always thought it was a little squirrely that they use gold hands painted black on the white-dial Expy. I guess they didn't want to make entirely new hands--they could just paint the regular sports-line hands black to contrast with the Expy's white dial.

800,000 dials a year do add up to quite a bit of gold.
