Critical collection mass : )
Esteemed members of the forum: I have a good problem. My collection has grown to a point where several of my pieces don't get the time they should. I enjoy each piece very much, but I do not like the idea of having so many watches that don't get the wrist time they deserve.
Direction Some like to scale out while others like to scale out (and some with unlimited budgets do both). I think I am at a point in time where I'd like to scale up. Background I got into this not looking to "collect." I enjoy the 114060 as a daily "banger." It has spot on time, and can work in any scenario. My 1665 mark 1 would be the last of mine to go, it's my favorite. The Daytona and the Day Date are both classics. I think the Daytona has the second nicest dial available every (first being the Panda). The LV is a fun watch, another spot on time piece and lastly the 1680 with a nice rolex service dial; something a little out of the norm. A great watch. The collection 1665 - Mark 1 Maxi '78 15520 - Daytona A serial 18238 - Day Date 114060 - Submariner 1680 Red - Service Dial 16610LV F serial Action Not that we have that out of the way, I am thinking about dropping two to four pieces and adding a higher end piece. I already have the money stuck back for said piece, but I like to stay within my self imposed watch budget. I am thinking about either a new gold sub, gold green faced GMT, or a 1665 double red. This will be my 35th birthday present to me. The 1665 and 114060 stay. Other than that, all else is fair game. Many variables here, but what would you do? Cheers!!! -S |

Steve, you do have a nice collection, quite a few subs, so a gold gmt would fit nicely in.
Trim down to your most fav pieces that you do wear. I am in a similar situation and will be trimming down quite a bit.

I'd say keep all the watches you have and then buy the one you want to add. Reason being it seems like when people scale back and sell some of their pieces they then have second thoughts and then end up buying them back...so save yourself from putting yourself through such a trauma!!!

I'd keep them all and add the new piece. However, if you must sell.....keep the LV sub, the red sub, and the 1665. All the others are easily replaceable.

Hi Jason. Thank you for the feedback.
I think you are (or were) another member of the 1680 service dial club. In fact, we should start one. I can be member #2. |

Great question.
The 114060 must be kept as the daily wear. The Dweller must be kept, everyone should have a Dweller. The Red Sub must be kept, you'll regret it if you let it go. The rest can go, and should be replaced by either the Rose Gold Ceramic Daytona with chocolate dial, or the Yellow Gold GMT with Green dial. Personally, Based on your age, I'd go GMT. You would then have a great daily wear and three amazing support acts! Jealous. As. Hell. Good luck.

Hi Vince,
I appreciate the feedback. I think we are on the same wavelength. If I do Daytona it would have to be a metal band - otherwise, great advice. Quote:

I would def get the YG GMTc, you have enough subs, and I would keep the two you mentioned and the DD. Sell the others if you cannot keep them and stay in budget, for a nicely balanced collection of two gold pieces, one dress and one sports, and two steel pieces, one modern, one vintage.

Wow. Great collection. If I may make just one suggestion: the 1680 needs to stay. Needs to.

I'd drop the Day-Date and add the gold GMTIIC. If you feel you need to drop another, I'd go with the ones that get the least wrist time first. Best of luck!

Another idea is to sell the red sub and SD and use the funds to get a DRSD. A great upgrade for not much more in that covers the SD/red/vintage bases all in one go.

To be honest you have about a perfect collection. I'd add a dual timezone reference and sit back and smile.
Not every watch has to be worn all the time to appreciate it's place in a collection....or history for that matter. Very well done. |

Go for the gold GMT. It will round out your collection nicely. If you have to get rid of anything only get rid of the ones that you can easily acquire again.

IF something must be sold (sigh!), I'd keep the 1680 (no way I'd let that beauty go), the SD (same thought) and the 114060.
Adding the YG / green dial GMT II C sounds awfully nice!

Another vote for the YG GMT here. If I replaced anything with it, it would be the DD.

Steve-
Very nice collection. I agree with you 100% last to go would be the 1665 Great White. Would never leave my stable if I had one of those!! Just a beauty. My 2014 watch is a 1665 or 16660 matte dial! Those really sing to me! Good luck on your next piece but I vote for a YG GMT! All that your missing! I would flip Daytona OR DD and pay difference. Cheers. Let the DD and SubLV go, perhaps? If you add the YG GMT II Green dial you are combining the looks of those great watches IMHO. My 116718 just sings!
