The food has been fake for a long time. Now the cashiers are fake too.

I eschew self checkout lanes at supermarkets and Home Depot/Lowes or anyplace else I find them. Screw them - I'm not helping them reduce staff when there's already too many people out of work. Every one of those lanes is a person out of a job.

The sentiment is understandable Bill, the reality is you are doing far less than putting a finger in the dike. CS jobs aren't what they used to be, and they are getting more and more specialized. Very soon retail checkout positions will go the way of icemen hauling huge chunks of frozen water up stairs. Adapt or perish...

I see it as a give and take you lose some low pay positions for a few higher pay positions to program and keep the machines up. Truthfully they may give better service than most taking orders at Micky D's.

I'm not sure if a computer is an upgrade or downgrade from some of the folks working the counter at some restaurants.

I refuse to use the ones at Kroger....I don't think my wife uses them at Wal-Mart (I refuse to shop or walk into any Wal-Mart) but she goes with daughter. I always prefer Costco to them all.

+1 I do not eat at McDonald's I go to In-N-Out. The food is better, they pay their employee's a good wage, benefits, and profit sharing.

Next, you'll be grabbing your own bun, patty, and special sauce as you roll by (or a robot will grab them for you!).
Automation will continue to expand into all aspects of our lives the moment the return on a capital investment is more attractive to businesses than the return on labor costs. Welcome to the future!

I never eat at McDonald's but I love self checkout. It is way way faster. New Yorkers who have ever been in a cashier line at Duane Reade vs. self checkout at CVS will understand what I am talking about. If the CEO of Duane Reade is reading this, install self checkout because you have the slowest employees on earth so now I avoid them like the plague.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about that, the next generation will have to. I think robots are the future not a fantasy and it's close to becoming a reality. Look at what has happened in just the past decade alone. |

I did read that some stores were rethinking the self scanner due to issues with the machine and increased loss from accidental or purposeful no scan on some items going through. That being said I've not seen first hand any store take them out. I agree with bill in terms of jobs but they are much quicker especially in walmart. I've used one in cvs and had a major slowdown when the computer needed an employee to come over to verify I was over 18 ... Buying cough medicine. However self service in the name of cutting costs is here to stay. Look at the panera bread model where they expect you to bus your own table.

I don't think all the people who eat a McDonalds in general know how to operate a self-check out system... Lol

I saw touch screen ordering machines at a couple Carl's Jr a few years ago in a couple of locations, but they never caught on. Granted, I haven't been in many more since then other than the ones close to me. The only issue I see with self-checkout in a fast food joint is that there really isn't any time saved, so customers aren't going to care to use them.
In a supermarket or store, self-checkout is great because it's often not a long line (if any) and it's faster checkout (no small talk banter with a human cashier). But given the recent uproar over low wages in fast food, I think this move by McDonalds is going to actually going to 'succeed' in terms of being a permanent fixture in the fast-food marketplace. |

I almost always use self checkout in grocery and lowes/HD etc. Saves me time and I agree with Marc regarding efforts being futile to stop the trend.
