Handmade Rolex Watch Box

I'm STRONGLY thinking of making a display box (maybe for sale) with the Rolex crown and name done in a relief carving for the box lid.

The box would measure roughly 12" x 18" x 6".

The box would be made out of either Mahogany or Walnut. I'd probably do a border inlay of Ebony and Holly as well.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like copyright or trademark infringement or Somthing. But I'm not a lawyer

If I make it for myself it's not. That's only if I sell it.

As long as you don't try to sell it you're fine.

I'm not even sure it's a trademark infringement. Would probably depend on how it's sold.

Let's say, for a moment, that I sell custom watch boxes. They can be customized with customer-provided art work. I don't sell the art; just the labor.

I see "folk-art" with industrial logos sold all the time.

It's still trademark infringement, period.

I'll post photos of the one I build for myself. (Not for Sale!)

You asked for thoughts and I'm sorry if you don't like them.

Would love to see the box when it's finished.

It's not that I don't like them. I figured there'd be some kind of trademark infringement if I sold them with a logo. No worries. There are LOTS of other things that can be carved into a box lid!

Looks like you were STRONGLY thinking of selling it!
Maybe try an original design on the lid, not someone else's logo/motif/name.

Instead of doing a logo, I may do a generic diver watch carved into the top.

I'd say, go for it, make something special and be proud of it,and I'll bet you'll want to keep them.
Ive built a couple of custom mausers, and have no desire to sell them......just hug
them and admire them.Give'r

An easy option for a logo ...

I'm quietly chipping away at making a box down here just now for my watches* and I settled on laser glass etching for the logo.
Just like companies use all the time for promotional products - wine glasses and similar.
The service is available from some glass companies and most well-equipped trophy shops.

Specifically, the top of my box will have a glass panel inlaid with a logo etched on the underside of the glass.
Beneath the glass panel will be green velvet so, the end result is a white etched logo framed by green velvet.

* Copyright disclaimer - That could be any watches ..... not necessarily Rolex. The green velvet is just a coincidence

How about a W&D logo as homage to Wilsdorf & Davies? Surely that one has expired.

this is from the ROLEX web site - - -

I don't think they would take kindly to the matter; but, that's jmo . . .

I hate to date myself...I recall a few years ago when a fellow member had an idea and followed up with it. The thread is copied below. It was embraced... How times have changed.

I, for one, would be looking forward to your product.

Sure, and not even a compromise...actually better than a Rolex logo, IMO.

These guys don't seem to have a problem...been around for years, and within a stone's throw of half a dozen Rolex ADs.

Yes Norman, but then there was also the time that the fellow had all those Seadweller shirts printed up and sold them here on the forum.......he was contacted by Rolex lawyers and got into some major trouble for it as I recall.....
