Shy Rolex wearer

Does anyone ever feel embarrassed about the fact that the wear a Rolex?
I proudly wear a Rolex almost every single time, but sometimes in my job as a lawyer I would rather prefer a 'quarts' watch
The luxurious feeling that you get when wearing a Rolex is not always a positive thing if you ask me. For some clients I'd rather hide the watch than proudly show it.
Does anyone recognize this?
I would like to hear your stories!

No.

I wear what I want to wear and rarely if ever does anyone notice.

If banged up and well worn, I wouldn't be self conscious about wearing one.

If you have worked hard for it, your clients should know this.
Wear it with pride, as I do, knowing what has gone into it!

I absolutely agree.

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of what I've acheived in order to buy a Rolex for myself. It was a far fetched dream as a kid, which came true when I was about 30 years old at the time of having my first child.

With that being said, I wear mine for "me", not anyone else. I've had it for 3 years and while others have noticed, commented, and asked about it, I've never brought it to anyones attention (besides my wife).

Regardless of what people on this message board want to believe, it rubs A LOT of people the wrong way. Does that mean they are right? Of course not but it's good to be aware that negative things could come out of it.

So depending on which family / friends I am with, yes, I do feel uncomfortable.

x 2. I contracted for 7 years across different sectors of the ecomony. The banking sector a completey different environment from public sector. Professional services from managed sectors.

some will say - who cares what other's think but when you're maybe working for 2/ 3 firms a year you soon sharpen your senses for what to wear & when. Thats not just for watches. I did a 14 month contract for one of the UK's biggest banks - short back & sides every 6 weeks, clean shaven, shirt & tie, suit. Moved into the public sector & had about 2 hair cuts in 9 months, beard, open necked short sleeved shirt.

There's a reason why presidents don't wear their good watches while in office ...... !!

I'm in your lot Sir. Couldn't have said it better myself, exactly what's in my head. For me, it's especially hard when you see a person who can't afford to eat, and you know your watch can feed them for a year or more. Regardless of what circumstances brought them to their situation.

Although admirable, with your way of thinking your car would feed them for 5 yrs, your ring if you wear one, 3 mnths, your shoes a month and on and on... Just help the hungry if you wish, don't feel shameful that you're not

You have a valid point there. I do a fair share of volunteer work, but always feel I can do more I guess. Unfortunately, there's a lot to be done where I live.

No matter how much we do, WE can ALWAYS do more. Just the fact that you do more than throw a buck in a cup makes you better than most.

I cannot relate to your sentiment... if I am in need of a lawyer, I will not hire one who has a problem wearing a Rolex...I could just imagine how he will conduct himself in pursuit of protecting my rights and representing my interests...

To give you an idea of the situation, sometimes I have to deal with people who lost everything. It doesn't matter why or how but they simply lost it.
When I am wearing my Rolex it sometimes make you look like a egoist.
There are many other cases in which I didn't feel completely happy with my expensive watch.

Why?

I assume you work hard for your money and your clients.

I would rather hire the successful hard worker than the pretender.

In such case just move up. Seriously. Get an AP Royal Oak (not the Offshores, but the classic 15202 or such), and noone will notice your watch or would care. I've owned a Royal Oak 15300ST for 2 years, and not one person noticed it or commented on it.

Alternatives: an old Omega Speedmaster "Moon Watch" or the Patek Nautilus.

Yes, sometimes when I go out with my friend who has an AP Royal Oak people will notice my sub but not his AP. When they ask about his watch, they'll say cool watch, what kind is it? He'll reply Audemars Piguet and then they say "Oh, I've never heard of it before."

Old saying I live by.......my employer/clients/customers can ask and require me to do many things BUT one thing they cannot tell me is how to spend MY money.

Life is short. Live within your means but buy things you like/want!

Haha, I was going to suggest getting a simple and unknown watch if it makes you feel better but I like this idea much better! An AP RO is a great idea or a VC Overseas or JLC.

Was thinking the same thing. I am looking to get a 15400 for the suit. Twice the price of my sub with half the looks. And the ppl that would spot it are likely enthusiasts.

But so far I wear my sub everyday literally with no problem. (Office to gym to snowmobiling) The above is more of an excuse for the next purchase lol

Well, lets put it this way.. my big boss dont want some of our customers to know he has a 45M jet (plus furbishing).
I guess he made a few correct decisions in his life. One thing he excels at is making people feel comfortable around him. He's know when to flaunt and when to be humble.

Yea, the jet kind of puts this and other notions about a friggin watch into perspective.

Sometimes. Occasionally, I work at an underserved/homeless clinics. These people pay attention to EVERYTHING. You can see them looking at your watch, tie, shirt; not in a bad way or anything, but they tend notice things.

Now, I just try to be sensitive about it by covering my watch under a shirt sleeve.

I don't think I've ever felt the need to hide unless it was for safety reasons. I don't have a problem with someone else unless it's a tacky watch but not due to expense. I figure I saved for a long time to buy what I wanted and shouldn't have to apologize. Many others could too if they desired. It's about choices.
