This is all I know about winders, that these two get mentioned a lot. I'm sure there are others. The two brands I use are called "Wrist" and "Thumb and Forefinger".

My understanding is that for most Rolexes you want bi-directional at about 650 TPD.

I am curious though, why do you need a winder for only one watch?

If I was forced at gunpoint to buy a winder, I'd go Orbita. American made in Wilmington NC. Otherwise, my fingers do the same job. Good luck on the hunt!

I use this one and have been very happy with it. So far it has been extremely quiet and reliable. For the price it's hard to beat. $50 w/ free shipping

Try not to go cheap. I've done that and they won't last. I also recommend against a winder that holds two watches on one holder. I've found that one watch is taken off it can become unbalanced, wear faster, and become noisy. I had one of these and ended up putting an old broken watch on the "empty" slot to keep it balanced.

Beyond that, Orbita is great but expensive. Wolf is a good winder, even the one noted above is OK on a budget. I have two Brookstone winders that have been chugging away silently for a couple of years. They sell a two-watch winder for around $150 and if you search around, you can probably find a coupon for a discount or at least, free shipping.

I like this Versa design, much like a Wolf but much cheaper. It can probably successfully wind those watch brands that don't work on a tilted winding plane, like Auto Seikos and a few others in my experience.

+1 for Brookstone. Far cheaper and and quieter than Orbita. I had an Orbita for a while and it worked fine but it was LOUD.

Does Rolex mention anything official about the use of a winder? I posed this same question to Omega a long time ago, and they officially stated the use of a winder was optional, and entirely my choice.

I use and have for some time used the Wolf Design 2.7 Meridian triple. Extremely quiet, good looking, and have performed great. In the morning, I just grab the watch for the day and do not have to wind and/or set the date.

I would forget a winder,Rolex movements aren't complicated enough to warrant a winder.

I wonder what is the lifespan of a 'quality' winder.
I bought a cheap one off Ebay and 12mths down the track it seems to be chugging along nicely. Almost completely silent.
I find the two watches I put on it seem to run more accurately with 8hrs (960TPD) on the winder than with less. On this setting they do not need to be wound manually and appear to function optimally. The DJ is consistently accurate to +1 sec/day.

For me, it is like leaving your car idling when you aren't driving it. Not a lot different really.

That said Rocky, that is a beautiful display/winder. I know someone interested in in a display box like that. Do you know if they sell similar in just a display option?

Brushpup, I understand what you are saying about the "car idling" but as I wear the two watches shown alternate days it means that each is always fully wound and showing the right time. I probably wouldn't use a winder if I was wearing the watches only once a week.
If I was having to set and wind every second day I would be concerned about the wear & tear on the crown. What you gain on the roundabouts you lose on the swings.
I didn't notice a display box by the makers of this particular product. It really is a very presentable product for the money ($90.)

I've got a couple of cheap ebay winders and they work well; I wonder what the draw back is of using a cheap winder on an expensive watch. Is it possible there is a contagion issue?

Judging by your avatar I'd say you would be a subscriber of the "rising tide lifts all boats" theory. Therefore the watch would make the winder better.

Perfect; should be able to sell it for more because it was used on a Rollie.

Not as long as the finest winders in the world and most have two called wrists. Its only roughly since the Internet and forums started that the winder must have hype began. Now 30 odd years ago everyone used the winding crowns after all that's what the winding crown is for.Now many years ago now had around 50 odd watches mainly English military both auto and manual yet never felt the need of a machine.Or needed them to be running 24/7 unless they were on my wrists. IMHO watch winders are little more than big boys toys, and today there is a big and extremely profitable market for such in most cases not needed products. And often a watch might perform better or worst on a machine, this is mainly down to gravity as most winder are a simple back and throe motion on the same repetitive plane and axis. Now when tested at COSC they used 5 different positions and temperatures to mimic what goes on while on the wrist.
