Books recomendations

There are plenty of successful people here and im thinking of putting in to reading time as a hobby. Could you guys recommend some books that you've read that have really influenced you?

You shouldn't have narrowed it to successful people. I'm a total failure but the Ayn Rand books have been meaningful to me, especially Atlas Shrugged. Don't let the fact that it is a novel fool you.

I spend so much time on the internet and doing other activities that I really don't read books the way I once did.

However, I do keep adding to my Kindle downloads waiting for a time when I will again immerse myself in literature.

I'm not really much on fiction these days, so my reading in the last two decades has been mostly of an academic nature.

I enjoy sociology and I'm not talking about the garbage that one finds in the sociology section of most bookstores.

I don't know who picks the books for psychology and sociology in bookstores, but it's abundantly clear that they don't have the slightest idea of what qualifies as appropriate subject matter.

I don't want to get into subject of religion, but as religion a powerful force in society, I have read many of the source materials for the major religions.

Currently, I'm interested in a trend in academic Judaism toward a reassessment of New Testament teachings and the historical importance of the major figures of the time.

I've also amassed a number of books about 19th Century American history, especially the events leading up to the secession of the southern states.

Also, I have a number of works considered to be classical literature, including the complete works of Shakespeare, whom I enjoy when I feel like really exercising my brain.

And here's a title, which I downloaded that I must have found of interest at the time.

Asparagus, its culture for home use and for market: a practical treatise on the planting, cultivation, harvesting, marketing, and preserving of asparagus, with notes on its history

I look forward to digesting that.

I think it's useful to choose a topic or an author and go to town reading as much about that subject or by that author as you can find and when you're done, move on to whatever or whoever is next.

According to some of the PM's and posts directed at me yesterday I'm a troglodyte who can't even communicate with cave paintings in crayon let alone read. So I guess I'm out of this discussion.

I would not say influenced me, but I am reading a book called " No Surrender." The life story of Hiroo Onoda the last Japanese Imperial Army hold out in the jungle until 1972. Fascinating his mind set and kinda how he endured.

1000's of classics available for free and instant upload on a kindle device.

if you haven't got an E reader, i recommend
just go for the basic no light, no wireles version, no color screen.

i don't read as much as i would like, but i believe it is like picking out a watch, just as nothing will help you as much as trying the watch on for a moment… books are similar, often reading a couple of pages will instantly tell you if it is a book you will enjoy reading. with the kindle you can flip through a few until you find what you like

ps Ipad and tablets are Not great for reading.

Don't know if you read the Steve Jobs autobiography, but it is really inspirational book. Ayn Rand books are great too.
