Ref. 16700 Pepsi sells for $10K+

At Sotheby's Geneva watch sale this morning a Reference 16700 GMT Master with Pepsi insert sold for $10,600 (9,375 Swiss Francs)--nearly double the high estimate. Is this an example of the new Ceramic WG 116719 lifting up Pepsi GMT prices, growing demand for an interesting often overlooked reference or what... Thoughts?

I've been looking for a GMT Master II lately and prices are really high. I've not seen the GMT go for more than a similar condition/year Sub, but it's happening now.

GMT II Master demand, as well as prices will only continue to increase.

Wow! Of course that final sales price includes buyer's premium, which I believe is 25%?

Still though, this could be an example of the BLRO inflating prices or just auction fever! That's the beauty of auctions, you never know what's going to happen!

Well, although prices might go up, I haven't seen any difference yet, and there are several Pepsi GMT-II in excellent condition within blocks of my flat in the $5K USD range. Am I missing something? Is there something special about this one? It doesn't look to be unused since it looks like there's some gunk on the bracelet.

More than I would pay for it. Maybe the bidders got caught up in a little bidding war...

WOW... I got my 1999 'A' serial 16700 back from Rolex after a full service a few weeks ago. It's not been worn since. I have all papers and original box etc.

Is anyone willing to accept my swap request for the new Ceramic WG?

I would never pay that for a run of the mill stainless steel vintage gmt. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Some GMT are more difficult to find in perfect conditions. 16760 for example was produced for only 5 years and not as easy to find as 16710

Mike--that $10K+ number already includes the buyer's premium--but it's still a nice jump in price for this watch, significantly more than recent auction sales including what Christie's sold a 16700 Pepsi for only a couple of says earlier also in Geneva. Maybe there were two underbidders for that Pepsi who after 48 hours thought decided they just had to have one.

Maybe they thought they were bidding on the internet hype 3186 16710 "error dial"

The 16700 had a really long production run and can't be thought of as rare. There are 114 of them at chrono24 right now. I guess it was two guys that didn't know when to stop bidding, I really don't think the new WG GMT-c has anything to do with this anomaly.

The increase in value started as soon as the first ceramic GMT was introduced. While visiting ADs in Guam and Milan both told me they could sell 10 that day when eyeing my 16710.

Not surprised in the least. Ceramic models lost some of the "mojo" that the 16710 and prior iterations had to offer.
