If Someday You Want To Focus Your Collection, Which One You Choose?
Hi, yeah if someday you want to focus your collection in one or two Rolex model, for example Mike, he focus to collect GMTs and Submariners. Almost all his collection is between that two models. And someone here, I forgot his name, he focus on Explorer 1 & II. Which one you choose to focus it? Me, I think want to focus in Submariner. I dunno I like this model so much, more than others model, even Daytona. And planning to collect more Subs someday. What yours? Thanks for your participation here. Thanks Guys!!!
Best Regards, TR. P.S: Sorry my poor English... |

If I had to focus on one model it would be the GMT line. And Mike would be my patron saint!

I focus is on ROLEX!
My collection is sport models of various brands with an emphasis on diving watches. I only currently have one vintage and don't think I will add any others unless by chance I find a "grail". I prefer to have watches I can wear.

Doesn't apply to me. I like diversification.

Well, if I were to focus on just ONE Rolex model, I would collect all the various Sub models that were made.
First to get would be a 1680 Red Sub Date! That's my grail Sub! It would be cool to have a collection like Mike Wood's collection (click!).

Mike Woods' collection is fantastic, the most comprehensive Sub collection I've ever seen (on line, only, of course. Thanks for posting, Bo.

Wow, that's an extensive collection by Mike Wood.
If I were to focus on one line (unlikely as it seems), it would be the Sub/SD line as well.

I wonder how many Comex watches are out there...and he has 6 of them. I think he may have cornered the market.

Mike Wood's collection looks like the display case at a large AD. What would you say he's got that collection insured for? I'm guessing $250-500K.

Well, the watch(-es) do(-es) not make the man, but there's no doubt about that the collection is out of this world and Mike's a fine fellow and in this case we sure do have a winner on both accounts!

I love my Sub, but if I had to collect I think it would be great to follow the GMT line

As "our" Mike has mentioned, a few more $$$ there. At around US$100k per Comex and MilSub alone, there's about US$1.5-2m. Personally, when I started collecting, I wanted to have one of every current model. Vintage Rolex didn't interest me much, nor did the sports models. Well, like most seasoned enthusiests (whether it be wine, cars, cigars etc.), as you get more involved and study the history of your "habit", your palate also begins to mature. As time passed, my tastes changed and now prefer the rare models (of course I have to like them too), and the sports models now dominate my "ultimate" collection. I like being a little different, and apart from wearing a fine timepiece, it's nice to wear a watch that is not on everybody's wrist. Not for the snobbery factor, but more for the fact of being different. Don't get me wrong, I love it when I spot a Rolex wearer. I have been very fortunate to own some fine timepieces. All paid for by me and my wife, and not inherited (unfortunately). Well, maybe it is a little bit of snobbery...........but hey why would anyone of "sound mind & body" pay more than a couple of hundred dollars for a watch. I think that which ever road you decide to take, you gotta love your collection. There are many "established rules", eg. horizontal collecting, vertical collecting, but ultimately YOU should collect what YOU actually like, and within your budget (this is our biggest problem ). John. |
