DECODING Bracelet & Clasp Codes?

I've purchased a used 1991 GMT-Master II and am curious about the serial numbers on the clasp and bracelet. The clasp and bracelet are all stamped 78360. One end piece is stamped 501B, and the other is 580. The clasp is also stamped S Z9.

Here are the questions:

1) I've been told that the S Z9 means that the clasp was replaced on service (s) somewhere around August 1998 (Z9)
. Is this correct?

2) Is it common to have different markings on the end pieces, or has one been replaced?

3) Is the 78360 bracelet correct for a 1991 GMT II?

Thanks,
Greg

I've heard this but, I'm not your guy on the details - Bo posted a thread on this the other day. I'll have a look.

Oysterworld is a great site, and am looking for someone to confirm the information here as it is presented as speculative. Also, I'm more curious about the different numbers on the end pieces. Do you have matching numbers (501B x2), or are they different?

This chart should tell you what bracelet and endlinks are "correct" for your watch:

(Pic from my Photobucket).

As for clasp codes, there are various sites listing those. Besides Oysterworld.de, another good source is www.oysterinfo.de.

Note what Oysterinfo.de states (Click here to go the the direct link).

Quoting from there (something that Oysterworld.de forgets to mention):

"Although the table is based on a big database of members from the r-l-x-forum, it is nevertheless still another assumption - the correctness cannot be guaranteed for this reason."

So clasp codes must be taken with a grain of salt. That's why there are "*" after some of the years ("* These letters are assumed to be correct but they are not proven as Rolex does not release this information to confirm them.").

Another example: In the years 1997 + 1998 a "Z OR W".....

Bo,
Do you know if Tudor clasp numbers are related to Rolex clasp numbers?

Thanks Bo, the references were a great help. I don't think I'll ever know why one endlink is a 501B and the other is a 580!
