Just Can't Pull the Trigger!

Hello all. I've been lurking the forum for a few months, and I have a big dillema. I want to know if there are any others out there like me.

I started saving money for a Rolex watch a while back. The Rolex I intitially had my eye on was a vintage SS 6694 for about $1500. Once i saved up the cash for that particualar watch, I started targeting the SS 39mm Explorer 1 that could be had for $5000 to $6000. Well, once i had money saved up for that watch I started targeting a white face SS Daytona. I now have the money put aside for the SS daytona.

Now, the yellow gold Daytona is really singing to me. I'm thinking about waiting to save a little longer so that i can purchase that watch instead. It seems that every time I save up the money for the watch I think I want, I end up wanting a different Rolex watch that is just slightly out of my reach.

What is going on with me? Has anyone else ever been unable to pull the trigger like this?

By the way, I'm enjoying this forum immensly. Beautiful pics and lots of info.

Thanks fellow watch lovers.

But you're not really in the hunt for the YG Daytona because you don't have the funds yet. You can pick up the stainless and still be in the hunt for the YG one the same way you are now - saving for it. And the SS will still retain a good portion of its value to put towards the YG one.

Frankly, if I had to save like that for a YG Rolex I'm not sure when I reached the number I'd be able to pull the trigger for that kind of money on my first Rolex. Usually (not always of course) people that go straight to precious metal like that are just writing a check.

But do what makes you happy. Whatever you decide, you're saving money. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes i'm doing what makes me happy. The hunt I was referring to was the hunt for my first mid-luxury / luxury watch. This money i'm saving is just what i refer to as my play money. Used for things that make my happy. Right now whats making me happy is pursuing my first luxury watch.

maybe spend the money on something else? it doesn't seem like a watch is what you *really* want to spend your money on. otherwise, i don't see how you could have resisted so long?

Yes initially that was the watch i wanted. But as I put more of my "play" money aside i keep getting grander ideas about which watch i want.

No. But not a bad problem to have. I'd get a SS over gold. I like watches that aren't heavy.

I commend you for your ability to save! Why not reward yourself with the SS Daytona and then flip it when you have the remaining funds for a gold one available, as others have mentioned?

you're going to drive yourself crazy, even more when you miss out on good opportunities.
P.S I remember I was in the same position and everyday I would look up so many watches and one night my wife records me while I was sleeping in the middle of the night saying. "Rolex yatchmaster 16622...bla bla bla.... GMT master 116710"

I would look on the bright side - you still have all your money and you've saved yourself a lot of flipping. I'd wait until you have the funds for the Gold Daytona - that is a great first luxury watch in anyone's book. If you decide you don't want it, you still have the money.

As an aside, you sound like the polar opposite of the gentleman on a recent thread who dropped 9k on a pawnshop frankenrolex and immdiately regretted it. Your way is better.

This may be the funniest thing I have read on TRF.

OP, you need to just go try on some watches and see what you really want.

i actually envy you - so many 'settle' because they (me) just dont have the discipline to hold out for what would really make them happy.

its not a bad thing, necessarily!

now, as some others have suggested, you should probably really get yourself comfortable that you not pulling the trigger doesnt really have to do with not finding a particular watch that speaks to you.

i honestly think that is unlikely because if it was an issue of not really wanting a rolex, you would have blown that play money on something totally different than a watch. you want 'some' watch badly enough that you have continued to save
