I intentionally put the watch down on the sapphire crystal every time I put it down, to avoid getting more scratches on my clasp!
The crystal doesn't have a single scratch after 7 years of this same routine!

Not like you couldn't repair/clean/polish your own watch, Vanessa.

The next time you go out to dinner, take the disposable drink coaster home and use it to set your watch on (mine's from Chilies ). Safer than the tile ... which is very nice by the way.

I have read way too many stories of watches being accidentally swept off of bathroom counters (resulting in smashed crystals or bezels) to leave my watch in any room floored with tile or any other hard surface. Small wall or larger floor safe sounds much better.

My husband would be the first to want THAT washcloth and would probably try to pull it from under the watch, increasing the risk of damage substantially!

There's nothing unsafe with this tile to begin with. I don't THROW my watch on the counter... I lay it down gently (and thanks for liking my tile )

My safe's downstairs and it's way too much of a hassle to open and close. If I don't have my watch within plain sight, I'll forget to put it on! My mornings are pretty hectic with getting two little kids ready!

Au contraire! If I didn't care, I would've just let it rest on the clasp
My bathroom counters are the highest counters in my home, where my little monkeys can't just grab it "and try it on"!

My point to the picture was that these Rolex watches aren't porcelain dolls, and the safest way to put it down (except for a velvet lined safe) would be resting it on the (sapphire!) crystal. I've seen hundreds of watches with beat up clasps and case backs or crowns that are dent because the customer would put it down on those (more delicate) parts. You can compare it with glasses... you don't want to rest those with their lenses touching the surface, right?

I don't think they have Chilies [sic] in Newport Beach...

That's actually a good (and obvious) idea and one I hadn't thought of. Might as well take advantage of the most scratch-resistant part of the watch.

On the tile. Who knew? I love when the conventional wisdom is challenged by somebody who actually knows the subject intimately. Superb Datejust, by the way. Very classy.
