I hate seeing that! Maybe instead of buying Rolexes at today's prices, we should all pool our money together to make a Delorean with a Mr. Fusion..."When this baby hits 88 mph, you're gonna see some serious *hit!"(Yeah, that being a trunk full of Rolexes!!!)

SS Daytona was still $10k. Even back then it was at a premium.

Yes, but if you go further back, the Daytonas were not really popular, not the manually wound ones. Now those could be had with a discount as the only ones in the Rolex range. First after 1988 when the first automatic Daytona ("Zenith") was introduced did the manually wound Daytonas really get sought-after.

Think of it that way $386 could buy you a Rolex in 1973, wow! Inflation...

I was on 50p a week pocket money back in 1973.
That would mean 8 years' income required to purchased a Daytona. |

Best thing to think, is that even your used watches are going up in price as well.
Everyone's watch is appreciating. |

As a recent college grad in 1971 I went to work in Feb 1973 for $700 per month before taxes. My apartment rent was $135/mo and my car payment was $70/mo. In 1969 I pumped gas at minimum wage of $1.25/hr. I drove a 1966 Chevelle with a 427 that got 4mpg on the highway and less than 1mpg from stop light to stop light that I paid $1300 for used. Of course gas was $0.31/gal for leaded premium.

In relative terms (i.e. adjusted by CPI or any other price index), Rolexes now cost more than ever. Their price increases far outstrip inflation over the years.
Impressively, however, depreciation is not bad on used Rolexes. In many cases, you can command the same nominal value of your watch now that you paid many years ago. You can't do that with many luxury goods (most high-end cars, in particular, come to mind as being really bad with depreciation). SNB |
