Mistaken
Hey guys, I'm starting this thread b/c of a recent run in with a stranger at a restaurant. I was just standing in line to order some food and the guy behind me asks upon looking at my black face submariner, "Oh wow, that's a nice Invicta?" I wanted to face palm there, but I politely just said no, and he showed off his invicta pro diver "limited edition."
Anyone here have similar instances where people mistake your watch for an homage/rip-off they're more used to seeing? |

Nope; and I wouldn't care if someone did. In that situation, I'd just complement him on his watch and move on. Sounds like he was proud of his Invicta. Nothing wrong with that.

I complemented his watch as well, but my main issue was more so with other watch companies copying original designs, leading to the copied designs being considered by others to be the original.

Not to start this debate again but the Sub design is not original to Rolex. So who's copying who?

True enough no need to resurrect the Blancpain/Rolex originality debate. I'm fairly new to watch collecting so I was just gauging the overall consensus on how widespread homages have become.

Well, in the specific situation being addressed by the OP, Rolex most certainly did NOT copy Invicta!

Everyone has produced a Submariner homage. What's the big deal? I just bought my second Squale because I like the look of a Submariner but there are places like where I do security that I don't want to damage my Rolex. Here is a Sub Homage made buy a reputable company. Lets remember not everyone can afford a Rolex but they want the look. It's fine by me..

I was entering in the pool on a cruise ship and I was wearing my Bluesy TT Sub and this guy said "Whoa Your Tag!" and I look down at my swimming trunks and said "What tag?" he says "Your watch".. I said "Thank you but its a Rolex Sub"..I thought it was nice that he was looking out for me...then I punched him in the face...
Cause thats how Mack Bolan rolls...on a cruise ship...wearing swim trunks....oh never mind.... |

I had a carney tell me once that he liked my "Submersible", but that he's more of a "Yachtsman" kind of guy...

"Submersible"? That means waterproof, and we all know it's not safe to get a Rolex wet...

If they did I don't really care.
People that know watches will know what's on my wrist. If you don't know what's on my wrist you don't deserve to know what's on my wrist.

You should have turned around and said something like this,
"How dare you?! Invicta? Are you kidding me? This is a Rolex. A ROLEX. The single greatest watch created in all of human history." You could have done that. I would have just shrugged and said "nice" when he was showing his off. |

You could have always responded with, "What's an Invicta?"...
