Fitting tribute, much respect Derek, #2

For all the time I spent hating what he did to my team, I never hated the man and now the least any baseball fan can do is tip the cap!! Though they were not all fond memories, if you love baseball then you are getting ready for a major loss whether you root for the yankees or not. Thank you captain, it was a pleasure to watch you play!!

Completely agree Marc, loved watching him except when he was playing Boston. He did everything the right way and in today's day and age I really respect that. He seemed like the perfect captain first one on the field last one off the field and worked insanely hard.

I tip my cap to Jeter baseball is going to miss him!

He did bring certain quality and integrity to the game. His absence will not go unnoticed.

I agree, I don't hate Jeter, like most Sox fans, but I don't like him either

The good news for Sox fans is that A-roid gets to take his spot next year

I have been a Yankee fan all my life. I lost a lot of interest in the team and then Jeter, Williams, and Rivera became part of the team. Wow, what great times and the leader was Jeter. Amazing player, he seemed to be able to will things to happen. Like Mariano before him, they will be missed and my interest in Yankee baseball has dwindled again! Thank you Derek for your great leadership and athletic ability for the last 18 years!

I was a boy when Jeter came into the league. I remember rooting for him, mo, tino, O'neill, Bernie. It was a good time to be a Yankees fan! More than anything I remember watching the games with my grandfather.

Jeter deserves the respect he gets. Players exist around the league who earn it from all, Jeter is one of them. Cheers to #2!

Jeets is a class act in the same category as Cal Ripken. A hard playing, team leader. Going to miss him for sure.

2-2, leadoff double on 2nd pitch, run scored. Nice All-Star work, DJ.

Over 14 All-Star games, 13-27 for a .481 batting average. 2nd highest All-Star batting average with a minimum of 15 All-Star at-bats.

Just want to make sure Paul, we're talking about Derek Jeter's retirement from baseball, not a death.

the RIP is more appropriate for baseball itself.........kids today have no appreciation for the sport and the 3-4 hour games that are regularly played in the American league.

It's sad, when I was a kid 40 years ago, baseball was my life, Rice, Lynn, Fisk, Yaz, "the rooster" Rick Burleson, etc

So true. More interested in posting to Facebook than they are at a game than watching the game itself.

A lot has been written about the death of MLB, but here's look at the attendance figures. Those Yankees' glory days in the 1950's?..They drew 1.4M a season to Yankee Stadium. Today, the worst attended team in MLB draws the same number of fans per season, and the best is over 3 million.

I think this "demise" stuff is a bit premature.

But that said, clearly kids aren't going out and shagging balls with their friends freestyle like most of used to do. If it isn't organized, it doesn't happen today. And baseball takes too long to play, with too little action in a fully organized game. Too bad "sandlot" baseball doesn't really exist today. That's where most of us learned to love the game!

Attendance isn't everything. When I was a kid my dad or Grandfather always had the game on the radio. In the car, in the backyard, at the beach didn't matter.

Plus in the 50's the games were during the day when most "men" worked for a living...

If we couldn't play baseball we were playing whiffle ball or using my Johnny Bench "batter up" trainer or begging my dad to hit some ground balls....

DJ played a major role in the game by exciting fans interest and contributing to ten success.

But for each All-Star and future HoF'er who leaves, there are 10 potential great players waiting to come up from the farm team and take their place.

That is what tells me baseball is strong.

I was at 2001 Game 3 ALDS against Oakland where Jeter made his iconic flip to get Giambi at the plate. One of the most amazing plays I have ever seen and I had a good look at it as I was sitting on third base side. Later that evening I was having dinner at Cheesecake Factory in SF and as I was entering the elevator to leave, out stepped The Captain. I told him "great game." He replied, "Thanks man." It happened so fast I didn't even get to check out his date that night.

As I watch my team struggle, we at least have DJ to thank for the last 18 years. There are so many memories of the captain and amazing plays. He will be missed. As for the exaggerated reports of baseball's demise, I only truly follow baseball and F1. I believe that football and basketball are more of a reality show with very little having to do with the sanctity of the game and more to do with the various thug personalities involved. Felons, misogynists and dog abusers. Thanks but I'll stick to baseball. A thinking man's sport. IMHO.

Here he is acknowledging some custom jerseys we made with his number.
