The DJII is the 'New Normal.'
In todays world of downsizing, rightsizing, cutbacks and layoffs along came the maxi case from Rolex. I have had my sights set on a white dial explorer 2 for some time now, because I felt that it "offended me the least" with the new cases. The GMT2C comes close, oh so close, but is still a fairly 'busy' watch with the PCL's and big ceramic bezel.
I am not trying to offend anyone here, as I have owned a GMT2C and loved it while I had it, but in the end, I swapped out for an Explorer 214270, which I consider to be the last of the real Rolex tool watches being produced. Just my .02 and not to be taken too seriously of course! So, in my quest to 'right myself' with the new cases and trying to choke down a new one in my desire to have a watch with a date function, I have been seriously looking at JLC Master Controls, Royal Oaks and now-vintage Rolex models I've owned in the past. Then it hit me. What about the "lowly" date just? The new DJII is just about the perfect Rolex. It's the "right" size, it has a date and with the new bracelet, feels of total quality. Are there any drawbacks? Two potentials: 1) No fold over clasp 2) PCLs. Item 2 can be easily rectified and returned to normal with a brush down / polish if need be. That leaves 1 and my question: Does anyone with a DJ2 40mm watch have any reservations about the clasp? I've never owned a non-sports Rolex and I wonder about it. So - is the DJ2 the new normalized watch? |

correct.
and personally, i have had similar concerns about the clasp. those concerns are gone. never had an issue. btw, i am sure you figured it out, but the perfect watch (for you), is bigger than some of the watches that apparently offend you because of their size.

I have had a 214270 for 3 years now, and recently got a DJII. I initially had reservations about the DJ II clasp, but have had no issues. No concerns at all now that I have had it for 3-4 months.

I owned a 36mm TT DJ with jubilee bracelet, so am biased towards that "look" in Datejusts. Maybe I'll try on one of the new ones to see how it looks. I think it will be too big for my wrist, but I'll give it a shot.

I love the 41mm size of the high-born DJ2s, makes for a great sports/dress watch.

I love the DJII but not the PCLs. If the day comes it is offered with Jubilee I will be first in line. I have no concerns about the clasp.

I was very close to pulling the trigger on a DJ2, but in the end, as much as I love the stick dial, I don't think that I could live with the mirror finished case.
The PCL should be of minor concern. I would worry more about the polished lugs and sides. PCL bracelets aren't my preference for the GMT-C because the GMT's case is actually brushed (except for the sides, of course). I would look at the PCL DJ2 as having brushed accents rather than a brushed bracelet with polished center links!

The DJII would be a great choice to round out your collection. It is not lowly in any way especially when you see the price. It also has a lot of options

DJ 2 is top quality, since I got mine the gmt and yachty have been getting alot less wrist time. I also agree with others here that it would be wonderful if it was offered with a jubilee bracelet.

My GV does not have the fold over safety clasp. I've had no issues at all with it.

I own a DJII, for now, I like the fold over clasp because it blends in with the bracelet. It gives the watch a more uniform look.

OK Let me explain guys!!
When I said "lowly" I mean with regard to the much respect the sports models seem to receive here - I said I mean no offense no anyone! I happen to like to the date just and it has simply occurred to me recently that with the new maxi cases on the sports watches, my eye is now drawn to the date just more than it ever was in the past. Yes, it's 41, that's correct, a slip on my part. Another observation: I wore a Sub for about 15 years. I'm sure many of you have had similar "mileage" with pre maxi Rolex's and I would say that those of us who "struggle" with the new case sizes are ones that spent a decade or more staring at the old ones. It's the same as the iOS7. People who I have met that started with it, think nothing of it. Those of us that have had iPhones since the beginning seem to have hang ups with it. Relax guys - the DJ2 is awesome and I am considering one heavily. |

I own one but it's FS at the moment. Just didn't quite make the rotation and prefer the divers from Rolex. Anyway great choice all round!

There is nothing "lowly" about the DJ2, even when compared to the Sports models like Subs, Exp2 or GMT. In fact, it is probably my fav watch in my collection due to it's versatility.

If you buy a DJII you'll still not own a non-sport Rolex
The oyster series is the sport line from Rolex. Dress is Cellini. If you are talking about a Sub, GMTII, Daytona, etc those are the 'proffesional' models from the sport line. It's simple really, a watch with a depth rate of a real 100m and which comes with a bracelet is a 'do it al' sport watch. BTW, the DJII is too big for my 6.5 wrist but do find it a beautifull watch , especially with the smooth bezel.

I installed this clasp on my 16622 and it's great. A bit shorter than the one on the GMT2 which it makes it a more appropriate fitting on a dress watch.
No issues here. PCL are on a DJII imho. |
