Rolex vs AP
Be interested to know if there is any specific reasons why AP watches are generally much more expensive than Rolex.
Do they have more expensive movements or manufacturing processes? I can't see the additional value in the brand alone.

Rolex produces around 900k-1 million watches per year-AP ~ 30K. So there is some more "exclusivity" with owning an AP
There is more work by hand on APs while Rolex uses more robotics and assembly lines. The fit and finish. On an AP is much more detailed and again-in many cases - done by hand. AP movements are - in comparison to Rolex and other brands - ornately decorated. This adds cost as well. You also pay for the pedigree of AP as one of the holy trinity of watchmaking-along with Patek and Vacheron Constantin. I am sure others will chime in with more... |

There's a video out on AP RO bracelets. Very labor intensive. Very intricate work.
I highly doubt if Rolex can match it.

Ah, another Rolex vs AP thread (these threads always end up no where).
If you don't see any "additional value" then it's not worth the time to try and explain the differences. Probably best to stay with Rolex. |

These are getting tiring. If you don't like AP, don't buy it. If you are worried about a few anonymous online anecdotes of watches running fast, don't buy an AP. Next topic please.

What is it with all the anti AP BS lately? I agree ... it's getting old. If you don't like it buy something else.
I suppose it goes something like "if you get it, you get it ... if you don't, you are not supposed to". And I would take some time to research before coming into an AP forum and saying you can't see any value on the the brand. You are not going to get a great response like that.

Agree with the replies so far. My RO is running +2.5s/day by the way and looking at the hand engraved solid gold rotor is mesmerizing.

Yes, the video is impressive, but why can't they design a good-looking watch?

Why do you always have to bash other brands?

Better yet why troll other forums if you only like Rolex. Look at his signature line. You would think he would stick to Rolex forum only instead of insulting others and acting like a troll.

The other thing you MIGHT want to keep in mind, our mods can see right through your BS, and sooner or later you will find yourself on permanent vacation. That would not hurt any of our feelings So I bid you farewell and will look for you on the Rolex forum. Because believe it or not, most of us here actually can appreciate it as a brand. |

After having pretty much every single model of Rolex ever made (except for the Day Date, just doesn't fit my lifestyle...), having two bad experiences with AP (Rubberclad and Dual Time), and currently looking at a Patek, makes me feel like crap to have given up on my Dual Time to go back to Rolex. AP and Rolex are not even on the same league, not even close. If you value craftsmanship and uniqueness, then there is a certain amount of brands you want to go after. If all you care is about brand recognition, blah design (too common due to production figures), pretty good resale, then yes, Rolex wins. BUT, and a big BUT if you don't want to be like the next "John Doe" and value fine craftsmanship by hand (to be human is to err...), then AP is leagues ahead of Rolex. Each has its unique niche. All depends what you are after. My first nice watch was a Rolex (age 18, bought with my own funds...) and that was 20+ years ago and though I have one that I bought nearly 7 months ago, I think it will be the last I buy (will NEVER EVER sell the one I inherited from my grandfather, a SS Date).

Rolex is my favorite brand but unless you have had an AP in your hands you won't understand
I was always -AP? Meh... but fell instantly in love with the royal oak design after trying my friends diver |

I felt the same way until I saw a RO in real life, then I owned one within a few weeks. Amazing amount of hand performed craftsmanship goes into these watches , unlike the machine work done on most modern watches.

Rolex and AP should never be mentioned together.....it's insulting to AP....
Rolex will never be AP, and AP does not want to be Rolex, ever.....that should sum up the difference between Rolex and AP, forever..... |
