New Member- First Question

Hello,

I found this site while looking for more information on my latest purchase--a new TT GMT IIc. It's nice to see others as watch "crazy" as me.

I have a question regarding serial numbers. Why does everyone block these out on the pictures of watch paperwork? Is there some kind of counterfiet ring using real Rolex serial numbers on fake watches?

I've not been able to find any information on why a Rolex serial number is so top secret.

TIA,

Wayne

Wayne,
Welcome to the forum...

There are two schools of thought on this.

One, of course, is that it doesnt matter much. You can go to many reputable re-sell sites and find the numbers prominately displayed so you know what you are buying..

The second is that if someone with criminal intent secures your number, it would be an inconvenience at the least to prove you had the correct watch, or more problematic if your number gets into the stolen/missing/counterfeit database somewhere.

It's always better to be safe than not..

No reason, just like people blacking out their license plate on their car on a picture. Positive ID, or possible fraud.

Hi there, welcome & squawk 1200 then!!!

Congrats! Enjoy your new toy! It is a gorgeous watch indeed!

As for the reason why most ppl will blank-out the serial# on the paperwork...
well... I don't think it has to do so much with the "Folex"-makers, but more
with the fact you wouldn't like some crazy idiot out there to get hold of your
serial and use it for any kind of illegal purposes... (imagine your watch-serial#
turning up on the stolen/missing database one fine day...)

Well, enjoy your stay here... and besides VFR I hope you'll never have to
squawk 7700 (or 7600/7500 for that matter)...

B/R

Thanks for the friendy responses. I figured it was a safety thing, but never heard anyone talk about it.

Most don't get the Squawk VFR thing unless they are in aviation. I am a pilot, but make my living as an Air Traffic Controller here in Atlanta.
