Meaning of Rolex?
Hi all,
Does anyone know the true meaning of name Rolex? I'm just curious as it doesn't seem to relate to the founders name or anything like that |

It's not the founder's name as it was Hans Wilsdorf.
Here is a bit of Rolex History: http://www.artoftime.com/web/en/info...es&brandid=221

The gist of it is that Wilsdorf wanted to coin a name that was unique and interesting. He certainly accomplished that.

According to Wilsdorf "Rolex" was the sound the watches made as they were wound.

This is what I read sometime ago:
By 1908 Wisdorf's firm became one of the leading watch companies in the UK. It was that year that he coined the name Rolex. Rather than immortalising his own name on the watch face as many other Swiss watchmakers had done, Wilsdorf made one up. It is said (though it has never been confirmed) that he chose "Rolex" by drawing this name from the French phrase 'Horlogerie Exquise' (exquisite watchmaking). Whether this story is true or not, the fact is that it would grow to become one of the most recognised brands of all time I also read somewhere that he got the idea from the word "rolling". Nobody knows how and why he came up with the name Rolex, it was and still is a great name. |

I really love the name Rolex.
When you pronounce it, it just rolls off the tongue so well. If I were in Mr Wilsdorf's shoes myself, I could never have thought of a better name.

Horological Excellence.
I read this somewhere in Rolex history material. The name is simple and easy to pronounce. |
