Thoughts on Glashutte Original watches???

Hi everybody,

Am trying to better my knowledge of watches and the different brands, still a lot of work before having a correct level of knowledge, so wanted to know what is your opinion on GO?

Of course I understand it's very far from A Lange & Sohne, which from the opinion of most watch enthusiasts is at the same level, or just below Patek, so at the top notch of watchmaking.

Looking at their models they seem to have a nice level of finition, cases, dials and movements, again far from ALS or PP where you see that the finition is at a perfection level probably impossible to surpass.

Their movements look nice but again the finition lacks a little something, they seem a little "messy" IMO.

They have a few interesting models like the one with calendar with day, date and year, and also with alarm that you can set 30 days in advance.

Have yet to see one in real, of course the prices reflect the idea that I have of them, seeing that for similar models PP, ALS or other top brand manufactures would have prices far more expensive.

Does anyone here own one? What are your thoughts about them, wether you have one or not?

Thanks for your feedback

Do not own one but have seen them at several ADs. Finishing looks as good in person
as does in pictures. I think the 'GO' rotor is a bit tacky looking but everything else is gorgeous. The only reason I haven't picked one up is that I'd prefer a lange and don't see room for both in my collection.

I equate it to the comparsion between a top of the line model from VW to an S class from Mercedes. I went to my AD and looked at a few GO models. I thought (my personal opinion) they looked better in pictures than in real life. Once you look at an ALS its hard to look elsewhere. Issue being that you can get at least two maybe more GO models for the price of just one ALS.

On a number of their pieces, the dials and hands are extremely beautiful. This was true with the PanoRoma I owned but sold to my brother a while ago because it didn't sit right on my wrist. He recently told me that he tends to receive more complements on the GO than his PPs. As for quality of the movements, I don't have enough knowledge to lend any specific information other than GO is quality manufacturer.

I own one, a Sport Evolution GMT, and it's a lovely watch. Very accurate, excellent finishing, top notch quality. The finely adjustable bracelet is a touch of genius: you press the GO logo on clasp (which is actually a very well-hidden button) and can easily finely adjust fit without removing/unbuckling. If you need to add/remove a link it can be done in seconds with a toothpick.

Movement is gorgeous and finish in is gorgeous. I actually like the GO rotor, a nice touch, and not uncommon to see logo on rotor (as on AP for example), ymmv. Also there are some great deals to be had preowned, you won't find a better package for the money IMO.

Great brand...the fit and finish on their watches is excellent. Good value, although I'd go a different route in that price range.

I've owned several GO watches and own ALS watches currently and the one thing I'm certain of is that GO finishing is nowhere close to that of ALS. They're great watches but they're no ALS substitute.

I agree 100% with this. GO makes a nice product but to put them in the same category as ALS is a bit of a stretch IMHO.

I agree with most of what's been said here and as a former GO owner, I love their watches. I think the finishing is very good. And while maybe not ALS levels, few watches are on par with ALS. That being said, you won't pay ALS levels for a GO, but they are excellent watches.

I also have no problem with the engraved rotor. I think it looks good.

Well boys, I tried a few on today and thought I would share.

All very cool pieces my favorite being the white gold senator(pic 1), but at 35k...I'm buying a lange.

If ALS is 10 out of 10, then GO is about 9 out of 10 + you get to keep a lot of your money.

The high end models are stunning and the good thing is that resale value is so-so. If you like the brand, you can get a pre-loved watch for a relatively good price given what you get.

I think if you we're buying a commodity I would agree. But watches these days are discretionary luxury items so saving money is not the issue: getting what will make you happy is.

@Le Chef--I am with you. Yet when the price of watches differs by that much, I can't think about comparing :-)

At the high end the difference between very good and exceptional comes with a huge delta in price. What bothers me is the fact that GO, while being a cheaper than ALS on average, offer a much better presentation of the date complication. Take a look at the internals of the movement and you will see why I give GO a major thumbs up for the price.

How do you feel about the GO Panomatic Counter XL on your wrist? I know this is a thick watch, is it comfortable when you try it on?

I love the Panomatic Lunar white face. Likely my next watch.
Great respect for the brand(obviously!).

i had a sport evo for a few months a couple years ago. nice watch but didn't like the bracelet much. i think the transparent caseback is the main selling point as the movement is the real aspect to appreciate.

I don't think that there is a bad product that comes out of that region. And some of the most underrated brands come out of Glashütte.

GO makes some really nice watches at fairly reasonable price points, so they're certainly worth looking at. If you like the look, fit and finish, then by all means go for it. I do not agree with the statements comparing GO to Lange, however, two different leagues, IMO.
