Hey Guys:

Prior to the invention of GPS in 1995, maritime positioning was based on celestial navigation and piloting.

Without an accurate knowledge of GMT, it was impossible to know your true position at sea.

This link is to an episode of NOVA titled "The Search for Longitude"; it runs about 1 hour in length, but well worth the effort.

John Harrison should be one of our heros in the pursuit of accurate time keeping, and its history.
