To realise the anxiety, panic and subsequent depression that some people can feel when getting scammed into buying a fake Rolex.

According to the article the man had mental health issues?

Getting scammed can happen. Many people take it very hard - way beyond the financial impact. This is the truly sad part. I'll never understand why the human psyche tends toward the feeling of shame in such cases.

The best thing to do in such cases is share the story. Don't hide it or avoid it. Always remember that a scammers whole purpose is to deceive, and he's betraying your trust. It's not your fault, it's his.

That poor man.

I don't think a mentally sane person would hang himself from being scammed out of 5,5K.

From the article it's clear he had mental health problems, and surely one can't blame ebay or the scammer for his death. That's like blaming Toyota for a car crash.

Sad for the family and friends of him.

It's a story about major depressive disorder.

The scumbag scammer did not discriminate to the health of their victim.

That it was a fake Rolex instead of a fake diamond/stolen car/timeshare scam is almost incidental.

He could/should have got his cash back at the Ebay/Paypal stage and would have likely won the case. He certainly didn't need the money since he was relatively well off.

Back to the open section, story about mdd. The same condition that afflicted Robin Williams.

But I'll be around for a while . . . .

Hopefully another 40 or 45 years . . . in good health please

But this is a very sad story . . . but if this gentlemen was financially doing ok . . . I don't understand the desicion he took . . .

Letting life go for a fake 5500 pound watch . . . .

But I have never been on Prozac either . . .

We'll yes I do if watches are my Prozac . . .

Take care buddies

I happen to agree with you, Mon. That was the way I read the story. He had issues that went way beyond being scammed out of the money for a watch.

As others have indicated, he could have disputed the charge, unless he sent a wire transfer - a No-No on eBay. So it was not about the watch per se. That may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but if it hadn't been that, it would have been something else. It always is, unfortunately.

The article also mentioned that the gentleman was on "anti-depressant medication"....

There is another dark problem with RSSI meds causing the users to become suicidal; the ROLEX link may have just been the trigger.

It has not been reported if Robin Williams was also taking these; I have a high suspicion that he was...

Be very careful if you take these meds....

Be safe.

It's always too bad and sad when a person takes his life over 'life situations/experiences" as we only get one life and there are no "Do Overs".........

Adam:

I failed to thank you in my previous reply for posting this link....

There are watches in life, and there is life itself; let's not let one over shadow the other.

Be safe.

Death by suicide, for whatever the reason, is a tragedy......especially for the loved ones left behind. I doubt that the Rolex scam was the sole reason for his ultimate decision to kill himself, but I can understand how the scam and subsequent court room battle could have precipitated his suicide given his fragile mental health at the time.....very sad!
