I feel the need to vent...

There is a classic car restoration shop within several miles from my home that often has some pretty exotic cars parked outside within feet of the road. Today, I saw a beautiful Rolls Royce outside from the 1930s and wanted to take a picture of the grille with my Rolex Day-Date to show fellow TRFs. To make a long story short, while I was taking the picture from the sidewalk, the owner came running out and began yelling at me. I tried to explain why I was taking a picture, but he told me to give him my phone to erase the picture. I told him I was a simple doctor that wanted to take a special picture. He went on and on about how the picture will probably end up on an auto internet site, and he still wanted my phone. Since I was on a public sidewalk, I told him to go f*** himself! and walked away.
I don't know if it was his demeanor or my reaction to being yelled at after spending years of sacrifice to gain the respect I feel I have earned. (Or maybe I was mad, because I felt like punching him in the mouth.) Was I over-reacting?

Seems like the guy is a jerk. If he doesn't expect some attention from a vintage RR, then he probably shouldn't be driving/owning it.

Well, in my view, unless you exhibit your credentials at all times, you are only entitled to the respect one should receive by the simple virtue of being human.

Besides that, if you were in a public venue, then the nut case who accosted you for taking a picture is way out of line and you were perfectly justified in telling him what you did.

By the way, are there really any "simple doctors?"

You have earned respect for being a doctor, not a pedestrian.

I don't really think you over reacted though.

I believe that my appearance and the manner of speech I utilize in normal conversation would elude to my education and breeding. After all, I did not have on pants with my underwear showing or flashed any gang signs. I was wearing a $1500 blue blazer, an 18kt watch, and a two-carat wedding band, driving a 911.

I am not trying to show off as some of you suggest, I was trying to paint a picture

Since you are an intelligent human being, you should have asked for the owners permission and this would have avoided any conflict.

How would you like it if someone was taking a photo of your wrist just to show others on a watch forum? Or taking a picture of your house etc? We need to respect people's property and wishes.

If the car was in a car show, then I would expect all would be ok with taking a photo. Since it was a private property, I feel that the owner is justified by asking you not to take a photo.

For some reason you are deciding to come off as elitist and arrogant but in answer to your question, yes, I think he overreacted.

You were on a public sidewalk and took a photograph of a pretty car. Am I being naive? Wherein lies the problem?

I think you should have erased the picture as the owner of the car requested. It doesn't matter how "intelligent, educated and well bred" you feel you are...erasing the photo would be the right thing to do in being respectful of someone's request not to photograph their property, regardless of it not being illegal to do so.

A picture that you are entitled to do something others should not simply because you spent some money on luxury items?

Simply stating "I was not dressed like a thug", would have conveyed the message.

Regardless, material possessions have no bearing on the situation. In his eyes, you are still a wannabe getting dangerously close to something he treasures. Your watch and ring could be fakes for all he knows.

That being said... having had a vehicle at one time that was often the target of other's fascination, I know how he feels. I never said anything for the reasons mentioned (in a public place, etc)..

I am glad that neither of you decided to escalate the encounter.

After my anger has died down, I believe some of your points to be valid. Firstly, the building appeared to be closed, every day I pass the shop all the garage doors are open. I would have asked for permission and inquired more about the car itself. I was startled by the owners aggressiveness because of the professional way I was dressed as well as being ten feet off his property, on the sidewalk. To ask for my phone using the f-bomb several times was inappropriate. He should have asked me to please delete the picture because he was protecting someone's private vehicle. I also did not care to have a person cursing at me within two feet of my person; it was threatening in it's nature.
I apologize if I came off as arrogant by mentioning my appearance, but some of you jumped down my throat for trying to paint a picture of my professional dress. Some posters also tried to shame and embarrass me for being a self-made success

This sounds the best as both WAY over reacted.

Neither of you were clearly right or wrong calmer heads should have prevailed instead of escalating a situation I try to intelligently diffuse it, that's what the MD and third degree black belt in me was trained to do

Also since I have a CCP those classes are pretty big on de-escalation, for obvious reasons

End of day no harm no foul, and as we always say "pic or it didn't happen!!"

Time to move on my friend

Next time, maybe go with the $1,800 blazer and 3-carat band.

Funny thing is, you won't find rappers who dress and behave like this taking pics of a Rolls.....They ACTUALLY OWN one ........ Apparently their "breeding" is at least one expensive car better than yours...

Where to start... You told the owner of a car to fu€k off because he didn't want you to take pictures. Then you came on a public forum to inquire if you over reacted. I think it's a safe bet you know the answer to this... Of course you did. I'm glad you're proud of your education and profession, you should be! But in the grand scheme of things, unless people are consulting your medical advice or know you personally, nobody cares that you're a Dr. And by the way, you're comin off a bit ignorant here with comments about your dress and breeding. Next time apologize and just keep steppin
