will teh apple watch increase value/prices of luxury brand watches?

Hi all- wondering of everyone's take on the release of the apple watch...

Although I'm an apple share holder, I don't think I am interested in this device..

How will it impact luxury watch brands?

Do we think it will increase the price/ value of traditional luxury time pieces?

I don't think it will have any impact on anything involving luxury time pieces.

I don't think it will impact anything except the amount cash in your pocket. Smart watches are not new, it's just apple's has now been launched. People will buy it, a new one will come out in less than a year with improved functions and people will wish they held on until the new one. This is only my own opinion of course but it will change nothing and i personally wouldn't wear one.

This.

Gadget lovers will buy the iWatch but your potential Rolex purchaser is not going to be trying to decide between the two!

Completely different demographic it'll be the G-Shocks ect that plummet in sales not the high end mechanical watches

I'd be much more worried if I was FitBit or BodyBug or Suunto, or someone making dedicated health-centric wearable devices. I think it's the Michael Kors, Citizen, Casio, etc along with the fitness device makers who are going to be materially impacted.

Also, remember that this requires an iPhone. Apple is a distant 2nd place in mobile worldwide when you compare platforms (iOS vs Android).

I like to believe we now live in a day and age where technology is now a tool and not a fashion or luxury statement. People still buy Porsche 911s because they are fantastic sports cars, and not because you can get adaptive cruise control and back up cameras.

I see the gentleman of 2015 donning his Apple watch for the morning workout and upon completion and dressing for the day's business or leisure he clicks the clasp shut on the Rolex / Patek / Panerai / IWC etc.. And enjoys the luxury of a durable quality piece of engineering.

Side note: the Apple watch is a total bomb for all of us weirdos that wear their watch on their right wrist as a lot of the functions are controlled by the crown.

It may drive more demand for luxury watches as it increases general watch interest. I don't think it will really affect prices, but again if it increases interest/demand it would certainly be nice.

For a long time people were saying "Why do you need a watch when you have a cell phone to check the time"?"....Now I believe that this move by Apple proves that most people still love and want watches...

I think the Apple watch will cause young people to start wearing watches if they haven't yet and then when they mature in their "love for watches" over time they will move up to serious watches like Rolex. So I believe it is a good thing.

Yes but Apple IOS is far superior to any of those other phones and platforms...its like comparing an Invicta to a Rolex. Now since Apple has moved into the bigger phone, its curtains for many of these other companies...Because the screen size was the only thing they had over the iPhone.

Agreed on your points. Re your side note, I'm betting setting the screen to "flip" 180 degrees would be an option giving you "southpaws" a crown on the proper side of your device

Smart watches have been around for several years. This one will appeal to the Apple groupies who want everything Apple and stand in long lines to get them. It will have zero affect on anybody else and will not even ripple the Swiss Watch Empire.

Maybe in a few more decades and into a more futuristic world, a watch that keeps track of your bio-functions and connects you to the Nanny State to monitor your movements and interactions, will be the norm. Thankfully we are not yet there..

I agree. I think it will really impact the gshock and lower brands now that im thinking of it in the short term. I'll also probably be someone who gets it to wear while working out and doing athletic activities. I would wear it over my gshock that I wear to the gym!
