No, David, it went from 1220m (4000 ft) to 3900m (12,800) ft. More than triple the depth! I doubt I'd ever even dive beyond 1220 INCHES! LOL

At $9K + they won't sell too many IMO. A big Omega or Breitling is @ 1/3 the $$$. At some point $$$$ affects sales...I'll bet this is the point.

I think the SD would be the way to go. Can't go wrong with a classic

You'll have some initial sales (latest/greatest) to folks, but I believe those sales will fall off rather quickly. I also believe Rolex is making a big mistake if the current SD is discontinued. There is too much of a price difference between the SD and the new SDDS for many folks to make the jump. I'm very happy with my Z series SD, so I see no reason to upgrade. As a matter of fact, for the difference in price between the two models I'd pick up a nice used IWC diver

With all of the writing on the face, the new SDDS looks like the GMT II that someone marked-up with all of the Rolex logos. IMO-Simple is/was better.

I wish the new DSSD did NOT have "ORIGINAL GAS ESCAPE VALVE" and "RING LOCK SYSTEM" on the ring lock... Having it on the case back is enough IMHO

I also wish the "DEEP SEA" or "SEA DWELLER" were in RED

You can't always get what you want...

But I'll give Rolex a 95 out of 100 on the DSSD.

I disagree. People have been paying over 10k on the grey market for Daytonas for the last 20 years, so the money is out there. The DS will have waiting lists for quite a while.

The attitude of most consumers that buy Rolex in regards to the price, is "it is what it is". Most consumers do not know what the old price of the watches was, so the price on the tag is "normal".

Pricing changes effect those that have been following the pricing of Rolex watches the most.

As a side note, I don't think that the writing on the ring is very visible in reality. Keep in mind that you are seeing pictures of this watch blown up. There are quite a few things more visible in pictures that are quite subtle when the watch is on your wrist. The most recent example was the engraved reflector rings. I believe that that was met with resentment when the photos were released.

To me, if I am spending that much money on a diver, I'm gonna buy the Blancpain FF or the IWC. The current model SD won out because it is top notch, classic tool watch at a great price. Now it is competing with a hole different group of divers and to me, it will lose out. Before people would compare the SD to the Omega PO, now they are going to compare the DS to IWC and Blancpain divers.

Just not a big SD fan. Nice watch but not one I will be looking to purchase. If I come across one at a good price, I'll be sure to let everyone know.

in production. not a lot more to say. market will stabilize fair market value pricing, just like Daytona's, GMT II-c's, (new) Milgauss', to include the new DSSD.

Whatever happened to the subtlety of making statements on a watch.

O.K. Rolex has for decades printed the model on the dial, but this new lock ring script is really gone too far. I can't work out whether the new text on the lock ring is the result of:
(a) a lack of respect by Rolex towards the intelligence of its customers and/or potential customers;
(b) a Rolex designer who grew up wearing G-Shock Casios;
(c) a frustrated marketing executive at Rolex with a 'great idea';
(d) a Rolex executive who has a personal need to tell himself 2 attributes about the watch so he can feel good every time he looks at it.


I'm not disrespecting the achievements accomplished by the new SDD but this kind of in your face advertising/self promotion does cheapen the overall style and professionalism of the watch and brand.

Where have you found a new comparable Breitling with stainless bracelet at an AD for $3K? Is $9K alot to spend on a watch with the SDDS technology, I don't think so. I'll bet there will be a waiting list for these watches. Look at the SS Daytona, or the GMT II C.

43mm is good, convexed crystal is good too. Now they just need to anti glare coat it both sides.

That's a good point, I wonder if there is in fact any anti-reflection coating on the crystal. The matt dial is another +ve that I welcome.
