What is your view on having a clearcase back mod on a rolex?

It's not for me. Rolex does not decorate the movement. I would not risk the waterproof integrity for something that I would only see when I'm not wearing my watch.
But, as with all things, it's your watch and you should enjoy it how you please. |

If they offered it either way I would opt for it

All about what makes you happy, IMO.
I haven't done the mod, but I wouldn't be scared to. Yes Rolex doesn't have as nice of movements as PP etc, but I think it's cool to see the machine powering our watches...

I would say yes on everything but the Sub, SD, and DSSD. Although on precious metal cases, you'd lose a good coin's worth of metal for probably no reduction in cost.

No for a mod, yes if it is from the manufacture

Not interested at all.
Especially considering the price increase that would follow.

I voted NO. I'm not in favor of clear casebacks. I have a few watches with exhibition backs but I never look at them. If I'm not wearing the watch (at which time the caseback sits against the wrist), the watch sits on a winder (where the back is also not visible).

NO. Rolex movements are pure function, and not made for exhibition.

Yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!
I love display backs. I am paying lots of money for what essentially is the movement, IMO (otherwise, I could just buy a cheap quartz watch). It is nice to flip the watch over and look at the movement occasionally. I have already ordered a Preik display back for my new Sub, and will hopefully be getting it soon. |

I thought I would like it. Got one for my vintage Speedmaster. And that movement is beautiful!
But I found it really added nothing to the watch. I did not like that it was not coming from the factory in that configuration, and I rarely looked at the movement. I would be even less inclined to put a clear case back on a workhorse movement like Rolex. |

I'm with Cru on this one. To add, the wizardry of Rolex manufacturing makes that metal feel like silk...glass tends to get that "sticky" feeling, especially when the temp starts going up.

As much as an innovation the calibre 3135 is on the Rolex Subs (etc) I wouldn't have the exhibition case back on any model except the Daytona because simply put: They're not decorated as nicely as other movements are.

Nice to see, plus I love the red 'Daytona' engraving:

I prefer to keep my watches "original". But I can see it's appeal.

The movement is utilitarian and obscured by the rotor anyway.

I think as a mod it looks cool, but for myself I would rather keep it OEM. If they offered it as a factory option, then maybe.

I'd like to see it as an option.
