Tanning/Sunburn itch of death!
I am making this thread for people who either tan in beds, the sun or get occasional sunburn, this is for YOU! Maybe no one will respond to this thread or whatever, thats fine. I just hope it helps at least someone!
A couple years ago after laying in the sun for a bit, I got a light sunburn. It was nothing that bad, but shortly after I got the sunburn I started getting this deep deep itch beneath the skin. It is impossible to make it go away by scratching. The itch gets so bad so quickly that it makes chicken pocks seem like a walk in the park. In a matter of hours I was seriously going insane and was going to just go to the ER. The itching comes from a allergic reaction from the sun and usually last a couple days. I promise you, every five minutes feels like a day. This may all seem strange to you, but if youve experienced what I have you know EXACTLY what I am talking about. Now, lots of people try aloe vera, cold baths, oatmeal etc. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. There is one thing that works and that is the beautiful holy PEPPERMINT OIL. This works for all super intense itches as it basically makes the skin feel frozen making all itches go away in that area. You can get it at any vitamin shop or gnc. I wrote a huge thank you email to one of the few people who posted about peppermint oi and sunburn somewhere on wikipedia. Not many people know about this apparently, so I just wanted to pay it forward. I hope this helps somebody someday Sent from my Motorola Razor |

I had that happen to me. It is agony and wish I would have known about this then. I bought every sunburn/itch cream available before going to the dr.

Thanks Matt for posting. I'm allergic to the sun & I'm unable to sit under it without shade. I'm usually found under one of those palapa huts. I can walk around it & put on sunscreen but cant bake in it.
I'm going to stock up on Peppermint Oil next tropical trip I take. If I end up in Greece next May, I'm going to bring a gallon with me. |

My pleasure :) you dont need much oil at all. A couple drops is all you need. After you use the oil, you literally smell like a walking candy cane Sent from my Motorola Razor |

Peppermint Oil is ok but Aloe is even better.
Break a 2"-3" piece of the plant and smear it on the affected area and it's instant relief. |

I was once on vacation down in Mexico when the family took us to the Gulf. It was a lovely day, swimming and having fun in the sun. My cousins had the idea of throwing a tennis ball at the numerous flocks of seagulls and diving beneath the water if the dive bombed us. It was fun. However until the sunblock wore off...like as soon as i stepped into the water. In the water for at least 3-4 hours.
I was cooked. Me, my brother and father all cooked Americans in Mexico on holiday. In the car we had the A/C blasting, but still hot. I am sure, our body temperatures must've been higher than normal because we did not feel relief until we were back stateside a few days later and had access to my savior, chilled aloe vera lotion. Oooooooohhhhhhh, i was sooooooo happy, relieved when the cool refreshment of the aloe vera hit the skin. Needless to say, i either now after that event wear long sleeves and pants in hot, sunny climates. Like you should, a white guayabera and white linen slacks with a panama, or i much to my dislike for sunblock and it's horrible scent use wisely and sparingly. I tan very well, it's just being in a steam pot with a heat light cooks you real good, like the Gulf Of Mexico does with no sunblock.

As someone who was diagnosed with skin cancer a few weeks ago, for the love of God avoid tanning beds and sunburns!

Both sets of Grandparents played Basal-cell bingo for the last part of their lives because that generation were all sun worshipers. Luckily I have fair skin and avoid the sun at all costs, we should all do the same!

I really used to be a "sun worshipper", not too much now. Kind of hard though in the summer when logging long road miles running but I haven't been to a tanning bed in years.

Haha! My husband is black hair (well, ok..a spectacular salt and pepper as he ages) black eyes and olive skin. He is the most beautiful bronze in the summer. I generally cover my skin in the sun...this was a friend's wedding and I had a beautiful new dress for the event! Vanity is not always a ginger's friend!

Something ive been interested to try is melantonin 2 injections. There is not enough research on it yet however you can make someone with pale skin turn light tan, bronze, medium tan, dark tan or black if you take enough.
Whats good about it is you inject it one or twice a week and not only do you tan incredibly well ( with no sun ) it makes you way less likely to ever get sunburn. Lots of celebrities use this but dont say anything about it. I have yet to hear anything negative about it from the people I know who take it ( moderately ) I remember a girl who was super white and couldnt tan at all who took it and it worked wonders for her. Once again, as far as im aware, there is not enough research on it for me to personally want to try it and I dont recommend anyone using it without doing vigorous research as well. Here are some pictures of people who wanted to see how dark they could get by taking it. Sent from my Motorola Razor |

I received deep 2nd degree burns over 45% of my body in Vietnam during a fire mission when shrapnel from an incoming mortar round set off excess powder in my gun pit.
After going through scrub treatment for about 3.5 weeks, the itching set in and I can tell you that it's hard to say what was worse, the painful burns and the scrub treatment or the itching that lasted for no fewer than two weeks. There was no respite and the salve they gave me to ease the itching was worthless. There's nothing to do but suffer until it went away and scratching was impossible as the new skin would just rub right off leaving a raw patch. So, I know precisely whereof you speak. Very wise words, indeed.

Coming from a hot climate (right on the Tropic of Capricorn) where it is Summer 9 months of the year, I have never 'sunbaked' in my life but find in my 60s that I have lots of little "skin cancers" on the arms and legs. Probably the legacy of working outdoors in the yard without long sleeves and trousers.
In my younger days there was little recognition of the dangers of sun exposure. I shake my head when I see young folks out and about in the middle of Summer with no hat and minimum clothing, maybe relying on Sunscreen. Some skin types maybe handle sun-exposure better than others but it is a big risk for very little return for most fair-skinned people.
