Kayci Hickox, please go away! Literally.
The nurse in Maine who apparently knows more about Ebola than the NIH, CDC, U.S. military and other public health agencies continues to disregard the concerns of the U.S. population and arrogantly refuses to isolate herself for a relatively brief period of time, thus reducing the chance of the disease spreading to those near her to zero instead of low but still possible. In the meantime, she joyfully rants about her human rights being trampled, basks in the glow of camera flashes and lights and excitedly anticipates suing someone or everyone with the help of glad-handing attorneys who make threat on TV news.
She is exhibiting the same disregard for the human population as the anti-vaccine crowd when they refuse to immunize based on false beliefs and misinformation in the name of "personal rights." Herd immunity cannot develop without the cooperation of the masses. Polio and smallpox would still be rampant today if current anti-vaccine sentiment had prevailed decades ago. Thanks to personal freedom, pertussis is making a roaring comeback. I frankly don't think that there are any measures that will stop the spread of ebola worldwide. But the idea that this one person (who calls herself and epidemiologist) refuses to cooperate with authorities scrambling to respond to the threat is repugnant. Her narcissism, arrogance and self-centeredness are frustrating. It's all about her, neighbors and social contacts be damned. |

yup, +1. She chose to travel abroad to help treat people with Ebola, and that's an exceptional thing to do...but to take a stance against measures intended to protect others from suffering the same fate. It seems to me she's undoing much of the good that she's done. Shameful IMO...

what's not surprising is how many people in so many different circumstances have a fundamental misconception of their supposed "rights".....

If she passes on this disease and the person who catches it dies, could she be charged with manslaughter or murder? I ask the question because I don't know the answer.

Hmmmmm. Not a lawyer, but would think that one could at least find a lawyer to bring a civil suit. But if she has disregarded cdc and other authorities, I would not doubt criminal charges. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Those are my sentements exactly, Joey. I'm no genius, but if she's bragging about being without symptoms during the 21 day incubation period, she's an idiot and should have her license pulled whether she comes up clean or not.

Plenty of personell who have been fighting against ebola in africa are returning to Europe recently.
As long as they self-monitor themself and don't show symptoms noone here demands a self-quarantine. As long as they don't show symthoms - they are not infectios. The family of Mr. Duncan who all lived close together with Mr. Duncan are all ebola-free and they've all gotten closer to him than anyone gets to a returning doctor or nurse. These (volunteer!!!) people are heroes and deserve our respect and should not be stigmatized -imo of course. |

I agree she should be more responsible but I also believe that this should have been handled better at the beginning. Proper protections and protocols are not being implemented and followed IMHO.
This should not be a choice as the consequences are too vast. |

A judge just gave her a court order to obey the quarantine.
Ok, now I read an article that says judge strikes down the quaratine. WTF is going on here. |

She's been blood tested, she does not show symtoms, she's being monitored. And even in the first stage, ebola is only very low infectious. Everything else is fear and panicking and taking away her rights. She may not be the most sympathic person in the world but I'd be upset if I would be locked away under the same conditions. |

Once again, a double standard in the way we do things... As someone that used to be in the military, I'm darn glad I'm not still in to contend with this kind of stuff. Maybe she can come stay at your house since you seem so sure about all of this. |

Hard balance to strike in a free republic. But I agree she comes off as an egotist.

Agree, just stay home for a couple weeks. Put others before yourself at home, just as you did abroad!

The point is this. Whether or not she has ebola is almost moot. She was asked by multiple agencies to briefly isolate and avoid contact with others as a preventative measure. She refused, citing mostly self-serving reasons. Had I been asked to make the same small sacrifice as our members of the military working in the ebola zone make when they return to home soil, I could not imagine refusing.
This is not a problem that would have occurred with my grandfather's generation. |

I would stay in my house simply to avoid the zoo (i.e., the media), but some people are looking for their 5 minutes of fame. It's sad, really.

She did a heroic act. Now she should do the right thing and just chill at home for a few weeks, log in to trf, and watch homeland and boardwalk empire on demand. No one knows for sure about this thing, why take the chance of infecting others when lying on your couch is just so fing fun?

.... do you guys realize that the ebola fear (particularly re. homecoming docs and nurses) is solely a US thing?

Isolation for a brief period upon completion of intimate patient care in what are likely Not well funded and managed facilities in Western Africa is simple and effective in stopping the spread of a deadly and contagious disease. Besides a relative brief inconvenience, where is the downside? And IMHO if it is worth doing, it is worth doing correctly, not the half cocked and casual way it seems to be being handled, especially by educated professionals. |
