I have always collected only vintage Rolex sport watches. Like a lot of people, I have been uncomfortable about taking them in the ocean, diving etc. So recently, I came across this vintage Zodiac Chronograph. It is depth rated to 200m and I think it looks pretty cool. So I am going to leave my Subs above sea level and have this as my new "beater". I think it looks like a cross between a Daytona, a Sub., and a Speedmaster.

This watch is far less likely to survive immersion than a properly serviced Sub... BTW, it's rated at 100m, not 200m.

I think those look great and have almost bought one myself a few times.... Get it pressure tested and it'll make a fantastic beater!

Can you post a picture of the side profile of the watch so I can see if the crystal is flat or domed?

The crystal is flat not domed. The dial says 100m but the case back says 200m.

That's a nice pre-Fossil Zodiac. Looks a bit like the vintage Zenith Deluca (except for the dial layout. The 7750-base movements are among my favorite (when they don't need service).

It's a nice looking chrono. But if you're only going swimming, I wouldn't worry about the Sub. I wear my GMT in the water all the time without a problem. The Sub is a beater. Not much you can do to hurt it.

its nice ,, but i doubt it will stand diving etc ,,, just buy a thirty quid Casio , job done.

The caseback on mine says 100m.

100 meters is 300 feet. Are many of us realistically diving deeper than that?

Certainly not but depth ratings are never literal. I wouldn't swim with anything rated 30m etc.

I did a little research and found out that these watches were originally sold with a 3 year 200 meter guarantee. I don't understand why it says 100 meter on dial and 200 meter on case back. I have never seen this with any other watch.

It's very interesting that you have both 100m and 200m on the watch. I've seen watches that are capable of reaching 200/300m given a lower rating, such as 100m, because they lack diving features like a rotable bezel. But I've never seen a watch have 2 different ratings on it.

Nice one and I'm sure it will do the job for you.

Tested to 200m is 200m with good seals just as you need to have on any diver including Rolex.

Isn't there a difference between slowly sinking a watch to the bottom of a 10-ft deep pool, versus powering your watch-equipped arm at rapid forceful speed through the water? I would think the pressure is different, thus affecting the ability of the seals to keep water out?

It is, for dive watches you have to test to 125% of the rating as far as I remember for this reason.
