I was in my local men's shop and saw some waxed Barbour coats. They aren't cheap..anyone have any experience with one?

Yes. Have a Bedale. I couldn't love it more. Versatile, classic, and tough.

I bought one last year but haven't used in since moving to Miami so I don't have long term feedback for you but I thought it was a perfect coat for cool rainy spring and fall days.

not good on leather seats ,,, more breathable than gortex long term though ,, not cheap , but they do last well , if you play your part.

I have the Beaufort model - 25 years old - and I bought a green quilted Barbour nylon jacket that I use as a liner in the winter. I never re-waxed it or anything, just let it age naturally. It is still waterproof and really cuts the wind. And all the pockets are very useful. Worth every penny.

Quality product. Agree with dysondiver, do not wear to drive the car with leather seats, or even worse, non leather seats. Bought my coat in Cambridge many years ago and still going strong. Lots of pockets and will probably outlast me. no hesitation in recommending this brand from personal experience.

Yeah, I've had a A132 Beacon dispatch rider style jacket for about 20 years. I don't think they make that style anymore. I've just had it professionally re-waxed and repaired by " Barbour ". It wasn't cheap but they did a fabulous job, it came back like a new jacket !
They're great for rain and wind but they are definitely not warm. You need something underneath on cold days. Look after them and they last for ever. I've seen a few " Filson " style jackets and they look durable but not very stylish. " Barbour " has both. " Belstaff " do some nice jackets these days. |

I just got mine back from Barbour after a reproofing. I have had it two years and between October and April I wear it everyday for walking the dog. Brilliant coat. You can have it repaired if you need to so it should last a lifetime. I have the one the Daniel Craig wears at the end of Skyfall.

Buy original well worth it. I've had two and one survives. I've had it re-waxed once and going strong.

Well, I bought mine in London back in '92. The greatest coat for wet or moisture-ridden conditions. I would wax it once a year with Barbour's original coating. When I bought mine, it was a lot cheaper. Now, I see prices between $400-500 in most catalogues. I finally gave my trusted Barbour to a relative who was going traveling abroad for a year. When I purchased mine, I was a bit light 'round the mid-section Now With all the rain we're getting here in California, I do need to replace it. Barbour: buy the original.

I have the Bedale and love it. You can throw it on over a suit or wear it into the woods. The coat is warm and layers well on top of a sweater, long sleeve shirt, etc. I bought mine from Orvis and a year later the pockets started ripping, they replaced the coat no questions asked.

One of my favourite mens stores carries the full line of accessories, hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, socks, waxing compound and a great selection of styles.

I bought an Invertère coat back in the late 70s and I'm afraid it's outlasted the company who manufactured it. I've been looking at the new Barbour coats and feel quite tempted.

I'm afraid for me they are old technology, and take it from me having fished most seasons in Scotland with one ! They shrink in the rain when sleeves end up half way up your arms then when its cold they go brick hard ! You then have to re-proof them every year or when required depending on wear. Ok they last a while but mines has been put to rest in the garage where it will stay for ever more ! I for one will stick with the modern fabrics

I have a Classic Beaufort that bought a few years ago. I prefer it's dull finish to the shiny finish of the regular Beaufort. Perfect weight for the South where we have lots of cooler rainy weather. Just pack it off to be reproofed every few years and like a good pair of cordovan shoes it just looks better and better. We'll worth the investment.

I have 2. One is a black Sapper jacket and the other is an uncommon Black Streak.
The Sapper jacket is a great jacket. I love it. It works well with blue jeans and slacks as well. It's a light jacket, lightly insulated and has a hood in the collar. It's good without a sweater down to about 25ºF, for me. With a sweater, lambswool usually, down into the single digits, ºF. It's light, with 6 oz. Sylkoil Cotton so the outer shell is thin and not heavy. The Black Streak is a more rare jacket than your average Barbour. At the time, i was told that there were only a handful of these jackets in various sizes in their stores across the US and that was why it was so pricey...but worth it. The Black Streak is my favorite of the two. It was part of their International line, but they don't make it anymore. It's a lightly colored charcoal gray with a black and white check inner lining(not to be confused with tartan or plaid). It's of heavy 8 oz. Thornproof wax cotton and it is about as heavy as a regular leather jacket. The design of this jacket, when it was new was to be a motorcycle jacket. It's of heavy construction, at the time(early 1960's) was some of the best stuff there was. Barbour outfitted the entire field of competitors in the 1964 ISDT with their riding gear and is a motorcycle jacket design, one of the firsts. Both jackets are of a"military field jacket" derivative, and both look good. The Sapper is more clean cut but the Black Streak is just rough and bad to the bone kind of jacket. I trust these two jackets immensely when it's wet or cold out. With a Barbour sweater, i have worn the jackets into the -ºF's and been comfortable. They shed water most excellent when they're new, or have a fresh coat of wax on them. You do have to re-wax them yearly or depending how fast the wax does wash off. I did not have to re-wax my Black Streak for a year, but keep in mind i didn't wear it in the summer for 5 months. I guess, every 6 months it needs checking up on. It's high maintenance for a jacket but its worth it. I like things that need the human touch. They become part of who you are and what you do.

I own one Barbour but don't wear it. Why the warnings against wearing a Barbour jacket on leather seats?
