Rolex 14060 for sale with strange serial

Hi,

I have seen a Rolex Sub no date (14060) for sale, I believe the watch is genuine but the owner said the serial number is 16103XX (blanked the last two numbers). Has anyone seen this before, I presumed they all started with a letter unless vintage?

He has the receipt from when purchased from a jeweler (second hand) and this also shows the same serial number.

All advice appreciated

Thanks

Like most things in life, verify to be sure.

The number should be on the side of the case that you are interested in, not any receipt or other documents that they pull out of the hat.

Looking at this dial, I would anticipate a Uxxx or Axxx serial (i.e. the dial "SWISS" is Luminova) approx. 1998.

Replacement case serial normally starts with "4".

Hmm very strange, thanks guys. Never would have guessed that.
So when a case has been replaced is there any way of finding out the correct year?

Also is there any reason you would fit a new case except for the obvious, damage?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to further my knowledge..

Remember to also ask the seller these question. If (s)he can't answer them - don't buy the watch.

If it was replaced by RSC or an AD.

A jeweler could have used anything that fits...

If he won't do that it's time to go somewhere else...

From the photo, at the oldest it's an A series as it does not have a tritium dial.
That serial number does not make sense.
It should start with an A or P or D etc.

At first I thought it may be a T serial and someone transcribed the T as a 1.

But then I noticed the "Swiss" only dial. Shouldn't that be an Axxxxxx serial (1999)? Hard to read an A from the case and mistake that for a 1.

A simple photo from between the 6'oclock lugs will clear everything up. That "certificate guarantee" is worth as much as the paper it's printed on.

Oldest for a Swiss only dial would be a U serial, unless it is a service dial.

Perhaps it's an "L" serial number (1989-90) that was hand-written as a lower-case "l" on that document. The watch could have been serviced at an RSC about 10 years later and gotten a "Swiss-only" replacement dial because the tritium had aged. Just a theory. I believe the first 14060 Subs were "L" serial numbers.

It should have one letter and six numbers. Ask to see under the six o'clock side of the case - here is part of my serial so you can compare-Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1420683609.986423.jpg

Hello guys,

I will put you all out your misery.
I spoke with the seller last night and he removed the bracelet, as I expected and many of you also did the 'number' was wrong. It is actually an A serial number, not sure why the cert has a 1?

Rest of the numbers match the certificate.

Just as I suspected.

That is good news
As far as that certificate is concerned, it is a piece of paper and has zero link to rolex service.

Who will do the warranty service if needed?
