Is there a consensus on the "grail" Panerai
I don't have a Panerai in my collection.
I've seen this discussed before but not sure there was ever a consensus. What's the one and only one to have?? I'd like to add just one and I would want whatever the most desired piece long term would be. There are so many variations and LEs, etc., that it makes my head spin and I end up just not buying one. Thoughts?? |

Vintage is the true Grail, but in a modern reference the 372 is pretty iconic. The 233 is a favorite modern for many, and I am sad I missed the 587. Ther are many more, but these are my modern, mostly available picks.

372 probably contains the most Panerai DNA of the modern watches available.

I am also hoping to have one Panerai.
I am planning on it being a 233. In reading a lot of posts on multiple forums, that seems to be a modern classic. |

Vintage/all-time - 6152.
In my view, the 233 is a modern day classic and strikes the perfect balance between Panerai "DNA" and functionality. Where is Travelller??? |

I like the 390. Simple, clean and hand wound.

372 for me
those overhyped, way to expensive , often crappy pieces from the 1940's are nothing for me. An abused simple watch or a 100 - 150K Patek … easy choice for me

Nice 360.
I will add the 587 is my current potentially attainable Grail. Been on so many waiting lists tried too many boutiques on the off chance but always thwarted. Tbh though I think the 372 is a better looking watch :-0

Grail is a loaded term. My order/categories:
1. Vintage 3646, 6152, 6154 (essentially unattainable) 2. Pre-V era - I like the 5218/201A or 202A (attainable, but very pricey) 3. Vendome/Modern Era (aside from the 21) - 232 (1930s), 587 (1940s), 372 (1950s) and the 249/448. Lastly, I would have to throw a T-dial 4 in there too. Pre-A would be ideal. Hard to pick just one from the Vendome era. |

I doubt there will be a consensus. According to the Panerai website, Radiomir's were first, then Mare Nostrums, then Luminors. The 424 is similar to the first Radiomir and the 372 is probably the most iconic Luminor. But in reality, I think you decide on Radiomir vs Luminor and then select the one that you like best.

i've been on the edge of buying a couple of vintage pieces with a very large cheque
in the end it was a huge amount of money for what was a somewhat old watch, there is always this line about buying the history but the thought i kept having was, it wasn't my history. It was somebody else's who i didn't know and wasn't related to, so meant nothing to me. It's a different world when you can say, it was my grandfathers watch. It strikes me it's a little like buying an old war heroes medals. They mean everything to him and his family. To you they just form a collection. It didn;t help that one of the pieces the dealer had was marked SS and i'm not sure my grandparents having fought against that would have every forgiven me. The other problem with the vintage pieces is some of them have a very dubious history, it's hard to be sure exactly what you're getting. so what are the other options, i have a pre v piece but only a collector would really know why it was rare, it doesn't feel special unless you love that kind of thing for me it would be a 203 and a 21, i have a 203, it's an amazing piece. The moment is primitive, but to flip it over always brings a smile to my face. The good news is there won't be any more so for me it's the perfect luminor. I've never seen a 21 in the flesh but i think would tick the boxes for the same reason. There are others which are stunning for different reasons, the 448/449 for the history, the 339, 341, 587, 382, 507 but if i needed to sell them all and keep one, one i could wear all the time without worrying about it, i'd take the 372 or 422 is you want the sundial. I think they're the best modern panerai, you can dress them up and dress them down with straps. I didn't really like it as much at first, but the more i wear it the more i love it. |

Love it Fred
I would avoid the many pitfalls of Panerai grail and go with all purpose Panerai 000 or 111.

If just one for your collection most would probably say 372 as it represents the brand's history and is attainable. The value has dropped significantly since it debuted, however it is still a must have for many Ristis. If you buy pre-owned, you'll be in good shape if you want to sell later. Just my
