I want an automatic watch...
I sold my Rolex Datejust II last year and ever since I've wanted another automatic watch. I want something I can wear everyday. I've been eying the Tudor Black Bay Blue and Pelagos but due to my budget now I want to spend less than $2,000. Right now I wear a Seiko chronograph everyday (lame I know but hey it's been a good watch). I'm not sure which brands/models to consider. My other requirements are no polished links on bracelet (scratches drove me crazy on my DJII), and nothing over 42mm (40mm seems to be the ideal size for my wrist).
Ball? Tag? Suggestions welcome. Thanks y'all. |

Stretch to a Speedmaster. You won't regret it.

thanks Joker I'll consider that. But if I were to stretch to $2,500 I'd probably get a Black Bay. And Ed I like the Seiko but not many people on "rolex forums" wear it as an everyday watch. So I retract my "lame" comment...sorry.

Save until you can stretch to the BBB; you aren't too far away from a used one.
Id also take a look at some of the Nomos watches, and Longines. |

I want an automatic watch...
Ball engineer hydrocarbon? Magrette?? These can be had used for around that price, as JJ suggested. Beautiful workmanship. Don't know how long they will be in this price range as Nomos has been moving up market the last couple years. .

Don't know if this one appeals to you, but I was able to get my Ranger for about $2,150 (although that was from an AD in Italy). It's a versatile daily watch.

Thanks all. That is a good looking Ranger. What I'll probably do is as suggested and save a bit longer and get a Black Bay or used DJ. But I need to be more patient and make sure it's a piece I want to keep rather than sell or flip a year later like I did with my DJii.

Squale maxi dial. ETA 2824-2 movement, sapphire crystal. Beauty IMO for a everyday watch $489.00. You can't go wrong.

$2k for an automatic watch leaves the door wide open. One I would recommend looking at is Baume & Mercier. The gray market kills the prices on these. You can easily pick up a watch that has an MSRP of $4k+ for less than $2k. My wife bought me a Capeland in New Orleans as a gift about two years ago and it is a fantastic watch. The fit and finish is amazing. There are man other brands (Breitling, Tag, Ball, etc.,) that could be had used or on the gray market for well under your budget.
Make sure you get something you like. The last thing you want to do is end up with something that you will take a hit on selling it because you weren't happy. |

$2k? Datejust, Rolex oyster perpetual, Rolex OP Date, speedmaster automatic, a whole bunch of different breitlings, Tudor, zenith, concord, ebel, B&M, ect. Plenty of brands new and used with great watches in that price range.

I think that Ranger will be hard to beat in the price range.
I think i have seen some used Omega Seamaster out there in the $2500 range, that would also make a great daily. |

You may enjoy looking at a slightly different brand, such as Christopher Ward. Their website has almost too many good choices and styles in the price range you're talking about. But don't stop there; Hamilton would also be a great place to look, and I can personally vouch (as others have above) for the Omega Seamaster Pro 300m Diver ... just like the one that's on my wrist at this moment.
One other idea: Zodiac has finally released their reissue of the Sea Wolf. The history of that watch nearly rivals that of the Submariner. Check it out on their site. I want one!! |
