Unexpected purchase...1680 (Lots of pictures)
Hi folks, so I was at an antique show over the weekend and came across a vintage watch dealer who had this 1680 that immediately caught my eye. I am not in the market for a new watch but couldn't resist (we all know that feeling). I believe I got a very good deal and a piece in pristine condition. The seller got this watch from an estate sale of an older gentleman who recently passed. His wife stated that he rarely wore the watch which seems to be the case based on the condition. I am by no means a Rolex expert let alone a vintage Rolex expert but know a little from all the great information and people on this forum. Based on that, I made the purchase but would also love to get everyone's feedback as well. Of course if I had serious doubts, I would have inquired PRIOR to purchase.
Here's what I know: S/N: 6.1m (~1979?) DIAL: Appears to be original (Mk III?) with nice creamy markers and has expected open 6 and 9 date wheel HANDS: Match the dial perfectly; creamy BEZEL: Extremely sharp so I'm hoping it's original. Insert pearl appears to be original as well. CRYSTAL: Plexi 'tophat' crystal CASE: When I removed the bracelet, it appeared as if it had never been removed and barely worn...no pitting, not rubbing, etc. (see pics). The lugs also seem as thick as can be (this is where I cannot tell if it has previously been polished) and very nice beveling/chamfers. Please enjoy the pictures below and feel free to confirm or correct my thoughts above. Also any additional comments/thoughts are welcome. Thanks all! Came with the original box (inner AND outer): The 'tophat' plexi crystal: The case/bevels: Obligatory wrist shot:
