About to start a new hobby!!

Name: IMG_1281.jpg

I'm about to join the ranks of you elite scuba divers! I am definitely excited. I've been really interested in aquatic life ever since I was a kid and my dad used to buy me these flashcards with different kinds of fish on it. I've snorkeled once in Mexico but this is definitely something I have wanted to do for a long time. We did our swim test and basic snorkeling skill today and we'll get familiarized with the BCD next week I think. All seems pretty intimidating with the weight belt and all the stuff we've be putting on so I'm hoping for the best!

So as you'll notice there's a GMT in the picture... Might this be a reason (or excuse) to buy the 116600 I've been eying for a few months now!?

Congratulations and welcome to the club! - You'll be fine, diving changed my life, PADI is great and diving skills and certification goals really can translate into everyday life. You need to get one of these..

Diving is so much fun and a whole different experience than snorkeling. Make sure you get that GMT pressure tested first though!

Definitely an excuse to buy the watch and even better excuse to travel to some of the worlds most beautiful countries.

If you can swing it Indonesia and Thailand have some of the best dive locations in the world, and you can get your advanced certification on a live aboard boat for the same price the certification would set you back in the western world.

Good advice - at the very least do your open water dives someplace warm!

I've been on the fence about the 116600 but this may be the tipping point... I'm not sure whether to classify you guys as enablers or bad influences. Other than the watch though I've been getting my other gear together. I got a gopro for snorkeling but i'll need the dive housing now and I've been looking at different underwater cameras. This is going to be fun i can't wait to experience some of the pictures you guys have been posting.

Have many great adventures and enjoy all the underwater world.
When I started I bought a 5513 Sub. as the SD was too new and not very available
Whatever you do keep your first Rolex.
I went from certified diver to senior to instructor and S&R and enjoyed every minute, except for body hunts.
My wife bought me an underwater camera.
What brand of equipment will you be buying? I had Dacor.

It seems a long time since I did my PADI open water. I definitely preferred the likes of The Great Barrier Reef to the flooded quarry in Lancashire where I took the test on a cold November day with next to no visibility.

It will bring you a lifetime of great memories that not too many get to cherish!

Enjoy your new hobby! If you think diving is pricey, UW photography brings it to a whole new level! It is fun though!

Man I love the passion for diving on this forum. Im sure diving gear is quite expensive... Sd4k doesn't come cheap! I plan on getting the bare minimum though when first starting out. Probably flippers and a mask/snorkel but I'm not sure if I can really benefit from having my own suit, bcd, etc. then again I don't even know what a bcd really is so who knows.

Buy the best you can afford. You may not need a SD as a Sub. will do you nicely.
For your open water test you will need a mask, snorkel, fins, full wet suit, but you be able to borrow the tank and regulator.
Your instructor will advise you.

It's been a while but it's great fun. Unfortunately my wife has chronic motion sickness problems so it isn't much of a couples activity. Last time she went with me she got quite green on the boat. That said, learn how to regulate your breathing and you'll gain a lot more time per dive. But don't forget to breath.
