I have just finished (Jan 18th) after over 42 years in the British army, the majority of that being infantry, over 5 years of active service during that time.

I was in Vietnam in 1965. As a MP officer I never saw combat ,however my best friend and another MP were killed during an assault on Saigon in 1966. I was in the army for two years stationed at Fort Dix, Camp Drum and then Saigon.

Sadly too as while history does not repeat, it certainly rhymes and what is old becomes new again as the lesson of history is relearned.

2004 graduate of the USMA at West Point.
Served 8 years as an Armor officer. First assigned as a Tank PLT LDR in 4ID and spent a year dodging IEDs (not always successfully) in Baghdad. Transferred to the 101st ABN where I did two tours in Afghanistan. Commanded a CAV Troop along the Afghan/Pakistan boarder in Kunar, where almost half of the Troop was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. Damn proud of those guys. |

I served nearly 28 years in the Air Force from Aug 1977- Feb 2005. I flew for 20 years on C-141 Starlifter aircraft. I have never been shot at, but did transit some very hot areas during my time as a crew member. I visited 65 countries along the way and logged 4100 flight hours as a loadmaster. I retired as a CMSgt (E-9).

I was Active Duty in the US Navy 2000-2007.
I didn't see any combat either, but as a physician I definitely saw the results of combat operations.
