New York Sub

Hi all

I'm off to NYC next month for my Birthday.Would it be safe to take my Sub, or leave it at home and opt for something more low key?I've visited a few times before, and I'm keen to explore a bit off the beaten track.

Thanks for any advice.

LOL...classic. I agree, a Sub in NY IS low key IMO. If you're going to visit some places 'off the beaten path' that you think your Sub shouldn't be...then I would say more than likely you shouldn't be there if you're concerned for the safety of your watch. My brother has lived in NYC for the last 8 years and hasn't gone a day without his Sub on his wrist...more often then not, people don't even notice. Then again...he's not walking through dark back alleys at 3AM.

Like in ANY part of the world, if you are in the wrong place and at the wrong time, you can get in trouble.

I'd still take the Sub Date with me, though. It's meant to be worn and no matter what you do or where you are, you cannot prevent accidents from happening.

Have a nice stay!

Cheers.

I live on the outskirts of London, and am careful when I travel into Town on the Tube, but I'd say Central London is still a pretty safe place to walk around, even with an expensive watch on your arm.Just after a bit of advice guys.

Your sub in the city should be fine, but as others have stated. Do not wander to ruff parts of NYC in the wee hours alone. Other than that you should be fine, during peak hours on the subway, you will see many kinds of high dollar watches. Many of the wall street folks like to take the subway during the market close opposed to the taxis because it is quicker during gridlock hours.

No worries, I've been living here for 24 years and I never had a problem. There are some places I wouldn't go with or without my Rolex, which is Harlem and The Bronx. Those are not my kind of places. I rarely go there and when I have to go there I go during the day by car. My wife says that I exaggerate but, I rather stay away from problems. Like Bo said, "Like in ANY part of the world, if you are in the wrong place and at the wrong time, you can get in trouble." Anyway, in New York, Manhattan you're ok.

right, just don't go to the place that you don't belong to.
eg. Harlem and Chinatown at night (midnight)
you should be fine with your rolex in Manhattan, some parts of Long Island and Queens

I visited Manhattan for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago and thought it was very safe. Police all around, lower and up Manhattan. I had a friend who was mugged in the subway about 10years ago. The took everything he had except his license.

Then again the Pope was visiting. Is Brooklyn a safe place? Or how about Newark, NJ. Hoboken seemed fine.

Brooklyn is the same as Manhattan, stay within the good neighborhoods if you are a tourist. (I.E. Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope), but unfortunately Brooklyn has many more bad areas than Manhattan.

I would stay away from Newark. The only time it`s safe there, is during an NHL game, and thats only around the arena. As far as NYC goes, I`ve lived here all my life. You can wear any watch you want. Most likely, no one will pay much attention. This is a big and diverse city. People are always on the move. The only watch that might get any attention at all, is a Breitling Super Avenger with diamonds. Your Sub should be fine.

Speaking of Brooklyn, if you can visit the Botanical Gardens, it is a must-see!
http://www.bbg.org/
A truly amazing place!

If you want a little off the beaten path, check out Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope. Both are beautiful neighborhoods, and you get a phenonmenal view of Manhattan from the promenade in Brooklyn Heights. Don't forget the wrist shots, and have a fun trip!

seriously....

Have you been to NYC in the past 15 years? You'll be fine. Just stay below 97th Street.

Long time New Yorker here...

Living in Brooklyn Heights I find it hilarious that you consider us "off the beaten path", were right off the BK Bridge and literally the subway hub of brooklyn, but the promenade is nice and we have some artist building a 120 foot waterfall on the promenade. You watch will be safe in ny, if you dont live in nyc you probably wont even be able to find the ghetto so your safe. Lowest crime rates in decades.

If its too dangerous for your Sub, its too dangerous for YOU. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just like everywhere/everything else, use situational awareness to your advantage and you'll have no problems. Enjoy your stay!

IMO I would think that it would not be an issue.
The same could be said about London.
Yet I felt safe and had no fears when I was there last month.
Just go and have a great birthday.
I would love to see NY.

I think NYC is a pretty safe place now. Just don't travel into the bowels of the outer boroughs, Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn if you don't know where you are going.

I was there a few weeks ago with my TT Blue Sub - Manhattan and Queens. You'll be fine and your Sub will fit right in.

I can believe that. London is hell right now. Lived here all my life & trying desperately to get out. Crime everywhere.

We need a Rudy Giuliani!!

I visit manhattan about twice a month for business. I typically stay in midtown but have meetings at the various hospitals like Mt. Sinai (100th & madison) and Columbia Presbyterian (168th St). it is true that manhattan is different once you get above 100th or so, especially when compared to the touristy areas. You just don't see a lot of tourists up above 100th.

My initial forays up town had my situational awareness increased a bit :) Nowadays I don't think much about it.

And I do wear my nice watches to NYC.
