Random Serial Number

Dear Members ,
Can anyone advise what the term "Random Serial Number" means as used in Rolex watch descriptions .

Thank you in advance .

The first letter of the serial number used to be a letter. Lets go back say 10 years it went F, D, Z, M, V, G and finally random.

Now a random may have a letter as the first digit but generally speaking the letter will be somewhere in the number sequence. We believe Rolex began the random serial numbers because they either ran out of letter first combinations or more likely they did not want educated consumers to try and date their Rolex as far as approximately when it was manufactured.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Hi Tom,

You are correct but:

Can't be 'random' and 'serial' IMO.

They also went from 7 characters in the serial number to 8 characters. This gives Rolex millions upon millions of 8 character number and letter combinations. My Hulk has 2 numbers then a letter then 5 numbers. But they have the freedom to use any combination they wish. Nothing will ever come close to being repeated.
