Will watch prices be impacted by apple watch...

Specially with the price of the gold version apple watch...

What you guys think, does it have the power to influence, in a positive or negative way, the price of watches? or it won't influence at all?

I predict many becoming increasingly agitated with iwatch threads very soon. I'm surprised the curmudgeons haven't been more audible to be honest.

Well.......the problem is that many of us will want one, and if we find them useful we wear our other watches less, if that occurs then the re-sale market takes a hit because perhaps we sell our watches, more on the market, prices lower. All speculation of course.

Remember that when Apple gets into a market they get in a big way. They were not the first with tablets, smart phones or laptops, but sure control a lot of that market today.

Apple is an amazing marketing organization. Perhaps they see the cellular phone market, tablets, laptops flattening out and being saturated, so this is a new market, we shall see.

Very different animals. I don't think it will have much, if any influence.

It won't influence luxury watches price.

However, it will bring up potential new buyers. Someone who never wear expensive watches and yet bought the gold iWatch will eventually want other luxury watches. On the other hand someone who's already wearing and collecting luxury watches, will not likely buy gold iWatch.

As a WIS myself.... I welcome the gold iWatch, it's the perfect propaganda to recruit more WISs

What I was trying to say is not the actual market value but the way people look at luxury watches... maybe people will be less critical with some buying a rolex for less than 10k when you have people spending that 10k on smart watch...

Watched the release today shaking my head the whole time, I will say the new MacBooks look amazing.

With that being said the 10k gold watch is absurd....and its on a rubber strap?!? Give me a break...their watch should have a gold bracelet to justify its market positioning.

Beyond that its comparing apples to oranges. The apple watch is a disposable piece of technology that will be outdated in 6-12 months. Rolex and swiss watches, on the other hand, are timeless heirlooms that are far more about passion, a nostalgia for mechanical technologies of the past, and tradition.

No, the challenge is that it is tech that gets obsoleted.

That's a big negatory, good buddy!

Smart watches from any company are having problems staying on the wrists of those who own them and there's no reason at this time to expect anything else from Apple.

I would suspect that Apple fans have been waiting for Apple to make its debut, so there will probably be lines just like there is for everything else Apple.

I guess the big question is whether Apple come up with a product that is so phenomenal that it will stay on the arms of those who buy them.

The next big question is how many people will pick up the 18k YG model at $10k.

I think long term this could be a problem for the watch industry. The coming generations will have smart watches before they can walk. Will they be interested in something with so few functions? I think this can become similar to the quartz crises which wiped out hundreds of brands. The quartz watches have similiar complications as mechanical watches most of the time but smart watches will have a whole new set of functions that the kids of tomorrow simple couldn't live without, like using the watch to take a pic of their food and post online...

However, this will not have any impact on my watch choices and as long as they are around I will always go with a mechanical watch.

Absolutely not for higher end watches. But I wouldn't want to be a share holder of Casio right now.

If anything it will help underpin the prices of real watches with the likes of brands such as Rolex to benefit.

I think, unless the Apple offering shows some real world benefit for our day to day lives, it will become if nothing else a quick way to identify the types of people to avoid

Perhaps normal watches will increase in price. As for 17K from Apple one gets exactly nothing worth more than melt value of the case 6 months from now.

I doubt the gold apple watch will be popular in the US.

Clearly some people will watch a movie on their watch but why? How could you possibly enjoy that?
