Icon20 flip advice.Panerai to Rolex?

Hi Guys,
I am faily new to your forum(which is fantastic by the way).
I own a PAM 104 44mm-great watch ,had it for a year.Have owned rolexes before-daytona ss,sub date and explorer 2.Cant really afford more than one expensive watch(maybe 1 more at a pinch but marraige may be on the line if I do!).
Love the new ss GMT and have been offered a decent part ex price to change.
Things nagging me are
1.shinny bracelet on the GMT.
2.tHE ad has said he would matt it down.Thoughts please ?
3.which watch will keep its value best?
4 I have a thinnish wrist.Doesnt bother me but what does everyone think about this?Obviously the GMT is smaller.
Will try and post a pic soon of the Pam but what are your thoughts?
Regards Jan.

Welcome To TRF...Newbie!!!

WELCOME TO TRF, MAN!!! Hope you enjoy your stay here!!!
GMT II-C is a BEAUTIFUL watch. I think you must get one that BEAUTY.
I sold my PAM 112H to bought my Explorer II White dial (now I alredy flip it to bought my Sub ND COSC). Because I think Pannie is not comfortable to wear. I like the model, yes. But that watch is not for me. Good Luck, Pal!!!

Best Regards, TR.

I have both a SS GMTc and a 104, you will love the GMTc, but it is not as casual as the 104. With the PAM you can dress it up with a croc strap, or make it a weekender with a rubber dive strap. I find that with the GMTc I tend to only wear it for more "dressy" ocassions. Just my two cents, but I don't think it looks that good with a tee shirt and jeans.

I have never felt "over-dressed" with my TT Blue Sub...even in jeans and a T-shirt. It is appropriate for any occasion and even dressier than a GMT IIC.

1 & 2. A forum member has done this himself and it looks great. If the AD does it I'm sure it will look great!
3. Hard to tell. Pam and Rolex are continuing their exponential increases yearly. Very few Pam's out there compared to Rolex, but your 104 has basically an ETA movement while the Rolex will have is own movement (3186) that is phenominally accurate. If you had an in-house Panerai movement, I would tell you 100% DON'T SELL, but you don't. Right now, we are seeing a decrease in the demand for the IIc as they are becoming more readily available and everyone is thinking Rolex will eventually replace all the bezel's to ceramic. I'm not saying the thing is going to tank in price, just not demand the price it used to 1 year ago.
4. What is your wrist size? I wear a sub and have a 6.5" wrist, but I cannot wear the Luminor 44mm's. I can wear the 45mm Radiomirs. The Luminor's fit hugh IMO. If you have a smallish wrist, I think the GMT IIc will do better for you.

Hope this helps, but as always, which one smiles at you more when you put it one? The 104 or the IIc?

Thanks for your replies so far.very helpful.
Mik,interesting to know matting the polished bracelet clearly worked for one of our members. That might sway me to flip the Panerai. Are you sure about the ETA movement in the 104?I will check when I get home but I thought the 104 does have a pan movement. It does keep very good time.
I have a wrist size of only 6.5 also.but personally I havent felt up to now uncomfortable with a 44mm.What I would say is that previous rolexes have felt slightly more comfortable.I currently alternate between a rubber and croc strap.
Would be interested in other members opnions.
Regards Jan.

I'm fairly certain it is a modified ETA movement. I'm not saying it is bad at all, just that the in-house Pam movements seem to be going up in value much, much quicker than the modified ETA movements. I love the 104, don't get me wrong, just pointing some things out.

The 104 has the OP III movement, which is based on the Valjoux 7750-P1. Valjoux has been owned by ETA for a while. The Panerai in-house movement watches are considerably more expensive. The 233, for example.

It's a tough call, because the 104 is a very nice watch. Most important, you seem to enjoy wearing it. The GMT IIc is also a fantastic watch. What about a pre-owned 16710 GMT--or a Submariner--and have both the Panerai and a Rolex?

That is a really good thought. A SD would be a good choice also since you like the higher sitting watches. It won't sit much higher, but has much more wrist presence like your 104!!!

Also, I know we are giving you options you didn't ask for, but let's say you buy a used/slightly beaten up SD or Subby. Wear it for a year and then send it off for servicing by Rolex. You'll get a brand spanking new watch! You almost always lose money in a flip. Just as JJ!!!!

As someone who has both the GMT IIc and the 104...I'd say..DONT FLIP! You'll regret it. I like the idea of going pre owned.....that way you get the best of both worlds. I still find there are days I like my GMT..and other days the 104 is Ideal.

I really appreciate all of your advice so far.As I have mentioned I did use to own a sub date and only sold it to raise some much needed cash at the time.I kept the 104 but it was a close call between keeping that or the sub.
maybe I should go full circle and swop it for another mint pre owned sub which I can get hold of.I could probably just do a straight swop then without parting with any more cash. Its either that or flipping for a GMT with cash or just standing still?
Shall we take a vote?!!
Regards and ever appreciative of your views.
