Oyster Precision 6422
I'm trying to find out some history of my late fathers watch. He was given it as a 21st birthday gift by my grandmother. i have established that it is dated at 1956/1957 but thats about all i have. Where can i find more details?

Welcome to TRF!
Nice inheritance! This watch must be very special to you since it belonged to your father! It's a manually wound "Precision" model, having the Cal. 1210 beating inside. The dial saying "SWISS" seems to be consistant with the years you mention since "SWISS" denote the use of Radium as luminous substance. Radium stopped being used about 1960 (Read more about Rolex Watch Lume here). When was it last serviced? If ever? RSC (Rolex Service Centre) might turn down servicing it since RUSA (Rolex USA) policies are quite strict and tend to avoid having older Rolex watches serviced. Luckily, there are independent RSC's out there that are not forced to go by the rules dictated by RUSA. An example of such an RSC is the one in San Francisco. Another good alternative to RSC would be a high-quality watchmaker like Bob Ridley (member and with the same username here on TRF). If and when you get it serviced, try to avoid having the dial and hands exchanged. They are vital for the value of the watch.

That looks to be in excellent condition..
Most of the history of that time-piece is where it was and what was done by your grandfather. Using the serial number on the case side and the information you already have, along with the picture, why don't you send a letter off to Rolex SA and Rolex USA asking about the history of this excellent watch. They may tell you the original point of purchase and any service history..

Thanks for the information everyone, i found reciepts for a service a couple of years ago so it has been done.I had the face cleaned up last month as it was yellowing and they have done a fantastic job. It was a jewellers in Chesterfield UK who handled it but i believe they sent it off somewhere. It was a little pricey but well worth the money for the result.
Overall value..... Priceless!!! |

Thanks for the information everyone, i found receipts for a service in 2006 space dweller, and pretty sure dad had it serviced fairly frequently. I had the face cleaned last month as it was a little yellowed and the results are amazing. It was a jewellers in Chesterfield uk that handled it but i im not sure where they sent it away. It cost over £120 but it was well worth the money as you can see.
As for the value.... Priceless!!! |
