So in conclusion...polishing a watch does NOT reduce its weight!!

Hi guys,

If you recall, last week I had weighed Subby just prior to its complete cosmetic make-over at my RSC's....and the weight had showed up as 136 grams!!

As you all know, I got Subby back on Wednesday from the RSC all shiny and new.....and today I weighed it once again on the SAME scales.....and got the same result - 136 grams!!

Just proves that polishing and shining up the watch does NOT reduce its weight!!

Cheers - JJ

PS: Still wondering though where the hell that EXTRA gram came from? The 16610 is supposed to weigh in at only 135 grams!!

JJ,

It's probably the battery that counts for that extra 1 g.

I reckon there was a lot of Bubba's body grime on the watch before. So polishing merely eliminated that body grime?

Body grime weighs nothing compared to SS? I thought so, yeah...

That's a good question!!

It cost me just over NZ$200 (about US$160). You must remember that in order to carry out a thorough job, not only does the bracelet have to be taken off, but the bezel and crystal as well to polish the sides of the watch. You can't polish the sides with the bezel in the way.

My guy did it in less than 3 days......and now it looks virtually brand new. I was quite pleased that no weight was lost after all that scrubbing and polishing!!

JJ, to be honest, there was definitely metal lost in the process, but not enough for your scales to pick up.

What you really need to measure this precisely is a laboratory-grade scale. To give you an idea, in my lab, this thing was precise down to the sub-MICROgram. If you pipetted out 10 microliters of water on the scale, you could SEE the apparent weight drop due to evaporation from the surface of the droplet. Another example: make a full-stop with a lead pencil, and it would pick that up, too. Human eyelash, no problem.

THAT is the kind of accuracy you need for the degree of investigation you are carrying out. Mail me the watch next time, and I will perform this service for free for you :)

With your "polishing" tools I am suprised there is anything left of your watches at all.

Polishing will definitely remove some of the metal. But because they didn't use an angle grinder for the job the metal loss is just in miligrams which is just too small to register. I'm assuming you are using one of those garden variety weighing scales.

Your SS Sub Date looks great now, JJ!

But weren't there some scratches on the caseback side? I seem to recall seeing that in some of the other pics.

Word is, he took his Sub to the same place that does his hair. As usual, they did a good job on both... RSC actually stands for Resplendent Scalp Care.

Actually, Harvey, they are very, very accurate electronic scales....down to the last GRAM.

Of course, it's possible a few milligrams or even micrograms could have been lost during the polishing process; but they would not register on such a scale.

Nevertheless, I weighed the watch TWICE - on TWO different scales - same result!!

Cheers - JJ

I really don't need to go down to 1/1000th of a gram, i.e. one microgram.

To the last gram would be fine with me, thank you!!
