Tell me about differences between i and j

I understand the bracelet and straps are mounted differently and are easier on later models. Can anyone explain or link to images etc?

on an I series there is a screw attaching the bracelet instead of a spring bar you would find on a rolex or other watches.. On the New J series model there is a little button under the lug of the watch on either side. there are no screws, just a push of a button and the rod slides out and the strap comes off.. now if you ask me, I prefer the older system on the I series as I feel it is more strong and long term. My button system broke on my J series and is in service for a new case which will take 3 months.. it as been there for over a month now.. i'm going crazy without it, and the worst part was, I only had it for 2 weeks before it broke. other than that everything else is still the same pretty much... except I think they made less models this year than they did of all the I series.. panerai always goes up and down on the number of models they push out a year. they are weird like that.

Sorry to hear you had to send your watch back to Panerai.
I haven't seen the actual mechanism of the new press button spring bar release so I can't comment.
However I have a "J" series PAM177 and it still has the screw in springbars. I don't know if this is due to the fact that the 177 is part of the 'historical range' or what.

Anyway, the "I" series was (if I am correct) the 2006-7 series release and the "J" series is the 2007-8 series release.

The new strap switching system is phasing in and doesn't have any link to one specific year of production. For example, my I series 233 has the quick change system.


Sorry to hear of the problems SubKing had, but I find the system very solid and happy it's being incorporated into more new production.

The watches with this feature come with a tool with separates into two pin tools. Press one piece against the catch shown and press the pin out with the other.

I had a chance to compare the push in versus screw in type spring bars and the push in type are not as stout and solid feeling and there is some play when you wiggle the strap side to side.

BTW Steve, I have my sights on a 177/176. I need to fill the base niche but I'm not sure about the seconds yet. What made you decide on the 177?
