Change PCLs to Brushed on WG?

I just bought a WG Pepsi... and the PCLs aren't really my style now that i have it on, it makes it look a little too blingy.

Has anyone changed the PCLs to Brushed? And alternatively, could they be changed back?

It's kind of an expensive watch to do this on, i'm assuming it would crush the value?

Thoughts?

I personally don't like polished centre links too much so I say go for it.
It's only going to effect the value if you want to sell to someone who wants it original.

It can be reversed/polished again, so why not? If the PCL's are not your thing (not mine, either) I say go for it.

But the polishing will devalue the watch somewhat correct?

It is your watch. Do it if you wish. Don't worry about value my friend. You probably just lost 10K in value after you strapped it on your wrist and walked out of the AD, lol. Gold watches take a big hit kinda like a new car so don't sweat it!

You're brave to want to do that on the actual WG bracelet.. if you're planning on selling it in the future, then yes, I can see how it may impact the resale value from the potential buyer(s) perspective. You are technically 'shaving off' gold after all

Give it some time before doing this. You may start to like it.
I really like the PCL's on my GMT and on my YM and never really understand why people brush them.

No, why would it ?

I suspect that a potential buyer would use everything to try to get the price lower, but something that is easily re-done is personal preference.

Many, many owners do not like PCL's and brush them routinely.

Alternatively though, the high polish usually develops a patina and softer look after a few months of wear. light brushing with some steel wool will knock off the shine without taking off any metal

It won't hurt anything but if it needed repair during the warranty period you'd probably either have to polish them out or let the RSC do it.

Other than that, no biggie really.

You might try swapping out the bands to keep the original in tact.

I really wouldn't do it. I think the GMT Master II is intended to be dressier than say the Submariner or Explorer II and the PCLs assist in this endeavor. I can easily see the argument for polishing out PCLs in stainless steel models, the case alone implies a tool watch sensibility. In precious metal however, we are well into the luxury world; PCLs just bode better on these models if you ask me.

I would be reluctant to remove any precious metal from any watch I owned, but then I feel that way about steel, too.

I say do what makes you happy. "Back when I worked in the jewelry business," whenever we polished/ buffed something it never failed; someone would always say something about shaving off their gold. I know the above quote is slightly joking, but I take my wife's ring to the store to buff and polish any chance we get.

Same thing goes with cars. Everything I do to mine doesn't "build the value," it just makes me happy and excited.

You can polish a ring/ watch 100 times and I can almost guarantee the .dwt won't change a bit. That is unless you are using a scale that measures to the .00000001th degree. (Slight inflation.).

Same goes for guns, snowboards, and other "hobbies."

Completely agree with you - we actually always drop off my fiancée's ring to the jewellers to get polished quite often when we make a trip to the mall as well.. Haven't noticed any degradation to the overall build and quality thus far, and she enjoys it a lot more when it's nice and shiny. ;)

to the OP, definitely do what makes you happy. It's your personal belonging and only yours to enjoy after all! :)

I'm not a fan of PCLs and personally hope for a coke without them comes out soon. I'd rather stick with the new style bracelet than go vintage.

I can't disagree with someone who has "polished a ring 100 times with no loss of material".
But if this is true why have Rolex watches I have seen lost their sharp edges and look so rounded off after only a few polishes?

It can be done. The look can be "reversed".

Would I do it? No!!

If it was steel I would have no hesitation but because its gold I would be reluctant to do it (if it was me)... but do what make you happy - however as others have mentioned if you have to send it to RSC then it would be polished back

Adding the brushed finish to the center links won't wear down the metal much. However, if you ever wanted to change it back, that is a whole different story! I personally wouldn't change it... Polishing/overpolishing is very apparent in older pieces.

When polishing any watch you always want to go to someone skilled in polishing Rolex watches and not just a jewelry polisher... I have seen many a watches with worn out crowns, lugs, etc. due to overpolishing

Interesting thread. I have been considering brushing out the PCL's since 2007 when I purchased my new s/s Daytona and still haven't made up my mind!
First, I changed the bracelet fitting a spare s/s fliplock, this entailed attaching a label to the original bracelet, so there would be no mistake about which was the original bracelet in the event of my demise. Then I fitted the correct bracelet again and tried to be happy with the PLC's but soon put the watch away and haven't worn it again.
Having a bit of experience in polishing chrome alloy and pm's, I really cannot see how the centre polished links can be re-polished again once brushed to give a distinct delineation between brushed and polished links. The polished links are part of a joined together 3 unit link (the two outer links brushed) are attached together in a single unit. The other point that baffles me is how are these 3 unit links joined together??

I would not. Give it some time. Wear it and if it still gets you then flip for something else.
