Trying to identify vintage Rolex

I'm trying to identify an old Rolex. It's a Submariner and I was once told it was the same style Sean Connery wore on the Bond films. Any Help would be appreciated. I want to make sure it's properly insured.

Sir, I believe you have a 5508 with what appears to be a gilt dial and "red triangle" insert. It is rather valuable.

Need better photos but could be upwards of $35-50k if the dial is original and unspotted.

More Pictures

I thought it may be worth 5-8k but hearing 75-100k is insane to me. Posting some higher res pictures if that helps anyone. Thank You so much for any feedback!

Prices get insane, especially age and dial dependent. And yours appears to be in pretty great shape

Very nice watch, what's the story behind it?

It's belonged to my Grandfather who died about a year and a half before I was born. He bought it while in the Army way back when and my dad kept it in a drawer for about 25 years since he already had one his own from my Grandfather. When I graduated college he gave it to me and I've worn it almost daily ever since. The guy at our local Jewelry shop gave me an estimate when we were finding a band for it. (The Band is not a Rolex band.) and that's where I got the 5-8k estimate.

Wow, nice story. That's quite a valuable watch, if it needs to be serviced, send it to Bob Ridley, he's the vintage Rolex guru, out of Texas. Don't let anyone change the hands, dial, and bezel insert, it would kill the value of that watch. Insurance averages about $10 bucks for every thousand insured. Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

Thank You! We actually had to send it to Texas to get it working. No one would touch it. Took my Dad a year to track down someone to work on it and I believe it was Mr. Ridley. I'll have to check the paperwork.

That's great news. How long have you worn it?

Trying to identify vintage Rolex

Wow if legit it's a very valuable heirloom, and very cool to boot! I'm very surprised the watchmaker who worked on it in Texas didn't give you lots of info on its history nor inform you of its value.

Do you have the box, original paperwork, booklets, etc., too? Those would also add quite a bit of value.

Never mind, still a wonderful heirloom. With that in mind, with it being irreplaceable, I'd be inclined to spend the insurance money on a really good quality, heavy, fireproof safe instead of expensive insurance. If it gets stolen, you can buy something with the insurance money, but the loss would be much more than financial, right? Just a thought.

Thanks! I will say it's not considered much of an heirloom in the family. It sat in a chest in the bottom of a closet for 25 years. Knowing it's worth so much more now makes me afraid to wear it and more interested in selling it to someone who would make sure it kept ticking for another 50 years.

I'm sure your pm box will be ringing with offers, there's quite a few vintage dealers that will see this and send you a message, wish I could be the lucky buyer.

I've worn it daily for around 10 years now maybe a little less.

My parents arranged the repair through a local jeweler but I don't know the whole story there. I was just very happy to receive it. I know that it took whoever repaired it about a year to find what they needed to do it right.

I also attached a picture of an oyster back that we have that we know nothing about.

Thank you all for the feedback it's greatly appreciated!

What a beautiful bubbleback, any better dial shots? Great case, and beautiful watch. Probably mid 40's early 50's but model and SN are between the lugs

Ah, sorry I misunderstood, I thought it was recently serviced. Didn't realize it was 10 yrs ago. If you don't want to keep it, I'm sure this thread has served to generate enough interest for you and you're probably well on your way already to a negotiated deal.

What is a fair price for this watch? I'm unsure if that is a fair price or not. The prices posted here vary greatly. I'm not a greedy person but don't want to sell 10k or 20k short of what I could get if it's even worth that much.

You're in a great situation with such a special watch. I would just caution you to be careful here: among other things the forum has strict rules about implied for sales threads, and it might be that you are a little close to the line here in terms of discussing what it is worth in detail.

The best advice I could give you in this situation would be to email a few of the most well known vintage dealers (there is a sticky thread that names them) to get an idea of value. Good luck to you my friend.
