Which Royal Oak?

Hi guys

For those of you who read the Rolex section on this forum, you may have seen that my wife has endorsed the purchase of a Royal Oak and a Nautilus, and we now have a three year plan to achieve this. The plan is as follows:

1. Buy a Royal Oak for me which will occasionally be worn by my wife
2. Buy a Nautilus for me and give the Royal Oak to my wife (to be worn by me occasionally)

I currently have a Sea Dweller as my daily wearer and this will stay in the collection. My wife has a blue faced Rolex Perpetual which will continue to be her main daily. It’s also worth noting that a watch that fits me perfectly is a touch loose on my wife, which is how she likes to wear her watches, so my skinny wrists (c.6.5”) are finally doing me a favour!

I have 9 months to give this proper consideration (as need to save) and will try on various watches, but keen to get the party started and would appreciate the view of anyone who has been on the same journey. The questions on my mind right now are:

1. Although we both much prefer the blue faced Royal Oaks, should we get a white/silver face to give the end collection a better contrast?
2. We are edging toward the 39mm 15300 but if we accept that white/silver is the right choice, then the 37mm 15450 comes into play – does anyone have pictures of them wearing both as a comparison on a similar sized wrist?
3. I’ve seen plenty of wrist shots of men wearing these watches, but any shots of ladies wearing these two watches would be very much appreciated

We’ve ruled out the Extra Thin due to the cost.

I imagine your wife's wrists are under 6.5 inches so the 15450 is probably the best choice. The silver dial is very nice but I prefer black on SS for more contrast, but if the 300 is too big for her then the silver 450 rather than flat white 300 would be my choice.

I agree with all of this. The silver 15450 can be a little monochromatic, so you do need to make sure you see it in person first.

There is a thread on here with someone debating between these two models and is wearing on on each wrist. I would look for that one.

I'd get a 15300 blue. Not concerned with same color dials as eventually it will be primarily hers and your wont mind much having the naut and such. Always best to throw collection considerations out the window and buy what you like.

Also 15300 will flip easier down the road I gather if the desire arises.

Exactly, don't go for diversity or better rounded collection or other things like that, buy what you prefer, I went for diversity when I got my 5726 as I got it on strap not to have 2 Nauts on bracelet, result is that I flipped it after 3 months, great watch but for me a SS Naut needs to be on bracelet

white dialed 15300..... if you are going with 5711, you must get the blue, so some variety is nice. I personally think getting watches that "fit" with others in your collection is a consideration.

If no Jumbo then the White dial 15300 would be a nice contrast to a blue dial Patek 5711.

Against all odds, the white dial 15300 has suddenly become favourite.

Will leave me with a daily choice of a black dial Dweller, a blue dial Nautilus, and a white dial Royal Oak.

Any my wife will have the choice of a blue dial perpetual, the white dial Royal Oak, and a gold vintage (tbc).

Hi guys

I'm back.

So, earlier this year things took a turn for the worse, and Rolex released the SS Daytona with Ceramic bezel, which I ordered the moment it was announced at Basel. So the bad news was that the AP fund was spent! The good news however, is that the Daytona is fantastic and I love it.

The other bit of good news, is that instead of the collection being a Dweller, Royal Oak, and a Nautilus, it is going to be a Dweller, Daytona, Royal Oak (for me) and a Royal Oak (for the good lady).

So...off to London in a couple of weeks time to start looking for a Royal Oak for me.

Still torn between different references. The Extra Thin with Blue dial would be perfect, but it's a little more than I can pay (I've set myself a £15k maximum). So I'm back to being torn between a 15450 (which would fit my small wrists perfectly, but doesn't come with a blue dial), and the 15300.

Will let you all know how the window shopping goes.

I'm only going to 'look' according to my good lady wife, but I have a feeling an order will be placed!
